NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

Three points. We were morons for thinking it would be easy. I include myself in this group-think. 2000 was a nightmare and 2004 will be no different. Register people. Get them to vote. The Democrats are way ahead on this front (through fraud and otherwise, but regardless), and turnout will be the difference.

Obviously, this will not be a blow-out, i.e., 7 or more point win, and we can thank the Bush team for that. They had Kerry and they didn't put him away.

Finally, forget all the talk about NJ, NY or MI in play. Going back to where we started, if Bush can win OH and FL, he will win. I'm assuming he's going to lose PN, so if he loses one FL or OH, he loses, unless he can sweep WI, IA and MN, which isn't likely.

It will be a long election night.

Every business has to do projections and I am sure that months ago Newsweek's Financial Analysts would have seen (due to pres election)October of 2004 as a huge bump in over the counter sales.
If you knew that the bulk of your readership was liberal and all you had to report was bad news during a time you were projecting higher than normal sales you would pull this crap...follow the money.

Folks,

The correct response to this news, and all news, is to call the campaign and volunteer a few hours. Everyone reading this knows it is true. Please be one of those who does so.

In my home alone there are 6 votes for Bush. In 2000, there were only two for Gore......Please don't throw rocks at me. I was ignorant in 2000.

To support your point, my nephew (20 year-old college student) called me about 30 minutes into the debate and asked me if it was too late to register to vote. I was shocked. He's extremely apolitical. He said he was watching the debates because he couldn't find anything else to watch. He's expressed deep hatred for Bush in the past. I was even more shocked when he said, "Man, Kerry's a jerk. I've got to vote for Bush." He said Bush is a terrible speaker, but Kerry is just an ass.

And I'm sure he wasn't the only one. Thanks for posting that for the benefit of those who might need a little cheese (with their whine).

Kerry has billions. Rove sold our President down the river for a swiftboat load of cash.

What is this supposed to mean?

Bush "lost" hmm? Must not of seen these poll numbers.

And don't forget this from the CNN/Gallup poll. So who am I suppose to belive CNN/Gallup or Newsweek?

Kerry/Bush

Expressed himself more clearly 60%/32%
Had a good understanding of the issues 41%/41%
Agreed with you more on the issues you care about 46%/49% Was more believable 45%/50%
Was more likable 41%/48%
Demonstrated he is tough enough for the job 37%/54%

Gee, if this is Kerry "winning" what is going to happen when he "loses" a debate?

Maybe a few people need to get out of the "media group think" about how Bush "blew his chance" Thursday night. The polling data doesn't support that opinion.

BS? No, Listen to all the gloom and doomers bying into the media spin that Kerry won.

Kerry sounded good but had major flub-ups.

Bush did not make any mistakes.

People are too complacent if they think they can run down their own candidate and not suffer.

"So if you apply the total percentages of the party vote that each candidate receives in this poll and multiple it against the number of respondants by party affiliation then Bush is actually up 50%-42%."

Hhhmmmm...this is odd...I'm not good with numbers- but this looks like a worthwhile question to send Newsweek, pronto.

Don't panic. This poll is not accurate. You will see. Don't lose your confidence. Keep the faith. Keep up your work to re-elect the President.

Is the Rats hatred of Bush so pathological, that they would vote this waffling, self-worshipping, PHONEY into the highest office in the land.

Klintoon was bad enough; if sKerry gets in there, we'll have to worry about our lives.

Wake up America, this Poseur is WEAK! (and he will show it too!!!!)

. I saw a timid, tongue-tied, ill-prepared man.

You should have listened to it on the radio. I was at work and called my husband several times to ask what was going on- if Bush looked ill or something weird was going on in the audience to distract him. I couldn't imagine what was going on during all those silences and stammerings. I was so looking forward to the debate, but my stomach was churning with embarassment for him and I had to walk away several times. This should have been the easiest put-away in election history, but instead new life has been breathed into the Kerry campaign.
