NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

You're right...the link on Google news went to the old poll results...the demographic breakdown above that shows more Dems than Republicans explains the variance...if you move the new results to the old demo breakdown you get Bush up by nearly double-digits.

Apologies for that...should have looked twice at the results before I posted.

Gee, if this is Kerry "winning" what is going to happen when he "loses" a debate?

Well, it does show the wild fluxuations in this poll. I don't know how much Newsweek is paying for it, but they are not getting their money's worth from it.

"Face it, Bush is nothing but a dumb, spoiled, arrogant shit.
A landslide electoral loss is guaranteed. I myself plan to vote for Kerry."
Good to see you have the Courage of your convictions anyhow, going with the loser and all.

I'm not "feeling the trust", if you know what I mean.

I do. I find myself checking sign-up dates on responses I don't particularly like.

Bush was disgusting??? We obviously watched different debates. A HUGE supporter might have chosen a different word.
But hey, maybe that's how you really feel, morally sickened.

Kerry's another matter, and since this word has a French root, it fits. :)

dis·gust ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ds-gst)
tr.v. dis·gust·ed, dis·gust·ing, dis·gusts
To excite nausea or loathing in; sicken.
To offend the taste or moral sense of; repel.

n.
Profound aversion or repugnance excited by something offensive.

[Late Old French desgouster, to lose one's appetite : des-, dis- + gouster, to eat, taste (from Latin gustre. See geus- in Indo-European Roots).]
Synonyms: disgust, nauseate, repel, revolt, sicken
These verbs mean to offend the senses or feelings of: a stench that disgusted us; hypocrisy that nauseated me; repelled by your arrogance; brutality that revolts my sensibilities; a fetid odor that sickened the workers.

Newschanne13 in Orlando had Scott Harris covering the Kerry campaign at Freedom High School in Orlando last night. He said he was one hour late and the reporter said he did better at the debate with 2 minute answers than he did last night. He said at one point he seemed to just get lost and go on and on and on! He added "But the crowd loved it." hahaha!

I don't believe this. It's just lib spin. I expect it to continue right through the election so the Left doesn't get demoralized at their sinking candidate and fail to turn out to help elect the downstream Dims. It also serves as cover for the DNC/Soros 'voter turnout' efforts (vote fraud).

I just don't believe joint press conferences, these so-called debates, actually decide that many people. And I don't believe there are that many undecideds this year as there usually are. 9/11 and WOT has polarized the voters early.

I don't think Bush's strong showing against Gore in the 2000 debates actually elected him in 2000 either.

The total doom and gloom out of this place sometimes over certain pointless things and then the overecstatic joy over other certain pointless things is really funny sometimes. But it makes me not want to post here. Y'all need to have thicker skin.

Think maybe need an Adults only room and a teen room. Seems like a lot of the doom and gloomers/overestatic joy people are just suffereing the normal hormonal swings of youth. Maybe an adult room for serious chats and the teen room where the chicken littles can go freakly?
