NEWSWEEK POLL: BUSH LEAD GONE
Sat Oct 02 2004 16:42:32 ET

New York-Sixty-one percent of Americans who watched the first presidential debate on September 30 say Sen. John Kerry won; 19 percent say President George W. Bush won and 16 percent say they tied, according to the latest Newsweek Poll which was conducted after the debate ended. Fifty-six percent say Kerry did better than they expected; 11 percent say so for Bush. Thirty-eight percent say Bush did worse than expected;  3 percent say so for Kerry, the poll shows.

The debate erased the lead the Bush/Cheney ticket has held over Kerry/Edwards in the Newsweek Poll since the Republican convention. In a three-way trial heat including Ralph Nader/Peter Camejo, among registered voters Kerry/Edwards leads Bush/Cheney 47 percent v. 45 percent with 2 percent for Nader/Camejo. In a two-way heat, Kerry/Edwards leads 49 percent v. 46 percent for Bush/Cheney, the poll shows.

A 62-percent majority of viewers says Kerry seemed more confident and self-assured (26% say so for Bush) and 51 percent say Kerry had better command of issues and facts (37% for Bush). Forty-seven percent say Kerry seemed more personally likeable (41 % for Bush) and 49 percent say Kerry came closer to reflecting their own views on most foreign policy issues (43% for Bush). The two were nearly even on several other points, including who came across as a strong leader (47% Kerry, 44% Bush) and who had a better plan for dealing with the situation in Iraq (45% for both). Forty percent of viewers thought Kerry was too wordy and 57 percent thought Bush was too repetitive.

Fifty-seven percent of all poll respondents say they are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time. Bush's job approval rating dropped two points from the Sept. 9-10 Newsweek Poll to 46 percent-a 6-point drop since the poll taken during and after the Republican convention. Forty-eight percent of registered voters polled say they would not like to see Bush re-elected but almost as many (46%) say they would.

That's nice.

I believe you're wrong.

Doing your part to register "voters" and such are you? What leads you to believe dem turnout will be so high.

Please, do tell.

This poll reflects what the MSM says about the "debate." That's what it is polling, actually. So the poll is self-generating. Actual VOTING will not shift. Bush by 52-46.

I was very dissapointed after the debate. I wouldn't be surprised if Lehrer gave the questions to Kerry is advance and they both prepared to tag team Bush. Every one of the questions were designed to have Bush on the defensive, likewise none of the questions were designed to have Kerry on the defensive.

It should be remembered that Newsweek had Kerry ahead by 7 right after the Democratic National Convention. No other polls showed that high for Kerry (Gallop showed Bush by 6 at the same time).

Also today from Rasmussen:
Penn. Tied (Kerry was ahead previously) polling Sept25 to Oct1

Colorado Bush up by 4 (gain of 3) polling Sept 29

Take consolation from this anyway you want.

The fact is, Bush could have buried Kerry. Put a stake in his stinking commie heart.

The EXACT OPPOSITE happened.

It wouldn't be so bad if Bush lost the debate in a fair fight.

But he was sent up to the podium over-tired and under-prepped.

Bush was set up.

The goddamn campaign manager set him up.

because theyre energized. I live in one of the most GOP counties and CDs in the country. I see anti-Bush and Kerry stickers all over. Now they dont outnumber Bush stickers and Bush will win my state easily. But it shows how energized theey are.

I think Rush and other commentators who think hate cant win an election are wrong. I think it can. It will set the DEMs up for a huge huge loss in 2006 but in 2004 it can deliver the Presidency

there is another thread saying that the media was calling the debate a draw till they went to a conservative blog and saw all the hand-wringing...most likely the live debate thread here and now the MSM is going nuts saying Kerry will win the election. They're like sharks smelling blood and now they are going in for the kill.

Exactly. It's been plain to me since the debate was going on. Those here to spread their propaganda and the regular freepers who should be embarrassed and ashamed of themselves to be so eager to take negative messages and embrace them.

We'll see. I hope you are correct, but my feeling is that most, if not all, of the polls are going to show fairly significant movement towards Kerry in the next several days.

Again, the main thing Kerry had going against him was that people did not personally like him. In the debate, he came across as a decent, normal human being. That alone will pull a lot of people (especially women IMHO) over to his side.

Don't panic, people. Don't forget this election is not decided on national popular vote. It's on state-by-state electoral votes. The President has been behind on the popular vote before, and even WON after losing the popular vote.

One MSM poll doesn't make the election, a month before the election. Especially coming from a biased source like Newsweek. Even if all the polls come in this way, just work harder and pray harder. The President WILL win in the end.

...convinced GWB not to be too harsh on Kerry

Apparently so, because just after a pummeling by Kerry he launched into effusive praise of Lurch which was not reciprocated.

This is self-fulfilling prophecy by the MSM. I suspect they would have published the same even if Bush had killed in the debate.

I'm not going to let this get me down, but I am frustrated with Bush/Rove. He should have spent that debate on the attack instead he played defense. If I was Bush every other word out of my mouth would have "flip-flopping, radical anti-war liberal from MA."
