One of the few surviving MoH winners say it best. In regards to the Marines on Iwo Jima as well as to all Marines in general.
"The ONLY reason that every Marine does not have a medal for valor is that there was no officer or senior SNCO around to witness their heroism and write them up for it."
SEMPER FI.
Today's Marines CONTINUE the TRADITION.

Have you ever been In combat?
in fact have you ever been in a fight for you life at all?
I am pretty sure I don't think so!
Also look at the context of what the article says.
There were many emotions running through at one time. Yeah there is a certain sense of happiness that I got the guy that was going to kill me first.
Here is a helpful suggestion. Comment on that which you know. If you have not been in that situation and you don't know the emotions involved in it. you come off sounding pretty bad.
Remember there are people out there dying for you rights. If you cannot respect and appricate that, maybe you should consider a country a little friendlier to you Ideals. Try France or Canada maybe!

"I had a weird feeling come over me," Young recalled. "I had many emotions kick in at once. I felt a sense of purpose, happiness, and sorrow, which all hit me at once." Here's hoping that purpose and happiness worked it's way to the top right quick.
Purpose - destroy the enemy.
Happiness - the enemy didn't destroy you.
Sorrow - the enemy was a fellow human being, however loose that definition is.
Nice work, soldier.

Absolutely wonderful read. So reminiscent of Hector Cafferata (sp?)at the Chosin Reservoir!

So you've been here a couple of days. Your comment seems to pass a negative judgement on a man who has done things, and seen things I'd wager you will never see. I expect you, like me, have always had a roof over your head. You've never missed a meal. And no one has ever taken a shot at you. You have this Marine to thank for your safety and your freedom.
Note that the Marine describes a range of emotions, not just happiness. However, if all he did was feel happy at killing the man who was shooting at him and his comrades, none of us would be right to condemn him. I praise him and all of our armed forces. To Cpl. Young I say: "Son, thank you for your service, and thank God for the Marines."

Former Army artillery here.
Marines made excellent artillerymen.
(THEY knew what a perimeter and perimeter defense was SUPPOSED to look like!)

he felt a sense of happiness when he killed the guy?
OOOOOOKKK
Take your typical negative 'RAT "RatherGATE School of Journalism" spin and be gone!
The actual quote is: "I had many emotions kick in at once. I felt a sense of purpose, happiness, and sorrow, which all hit me at once."
I interpret that to mean that he was sad for what had to be done, yet happy that he'd accomplished his purpose of protecting himself and the others who were there with him.
Your interpretation is sick!

This story is why every MARINE is a 0311 first. Most of you out there may not of heard of the Black Water guys. They play hard too. my Goddaughter's soon to have been husband, father of her son was Blackwater, he died on the Baghdad road a few months ago. Good Men die so that others may be Free!
