JERUSALEM-- A violent brawl broke out Monday afternoon at Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulcher between Catholics over religious rights at the church, police said.
Police forces were called in to separate Franciscans and Greek Orthodox priests after they got into a fight over who would open the door of the church. Several people were lightly wounded by blows, and several suspects were detained for assault. After police intervened, the religious ceremony continued and calm was restored.
The church is the scene of periodic brawls between various Christian sects who share control over the church, as to who will take the lead in such religious ceremonies.
The site is revered by some Christian sects as the place where Jesus Christ is buried.
I do hope nobody was shot in the fracas. That really hurts!
"When I was a teenager I kissed a girl on the veranda.
"
I tried that once, but her brother beat me up.
Well the first thing wrong is that Jesus Christ isn't buried. But I get your original point.
Franciscans getting into a fight pretty much blows my whole worldview.
Domenicans, on the other hand...
:-) I like your use of "is" instead of "was." I always speak of Jesus in the present tense since He is still alive.
I bet they are closet freepers. :~)
Do Domenicans have a tougher rep than Franciscans?
"Just when you thought you had seen it all" ping.
First, Orthodox are not Catholics, Franciscans are a Catholic monestic order, Greek Orthodox are a branch of the over all Eastern Orthdox Church. Very big difference.
As for brawls there, they are continous. Nothing new.
I usually start with the lips, then move on to the veranda.
As for what's wrong with this ...
"The site is revered by some Christian sects as the place where Jesus Christ is buried."
... Christianity may revere a place where Jesus Christ "WAS" buried, but you'd have to look to Judaism and Islam to find someone who believed He "is" buried.
I should sic the Mods on you guys.
I'd have to check my Church history, but if I recall correctly, the D's were the driving force behind the various Inquistitions. Although I think the Spanish govt was behind the (naturally) Spanish Inquisition.
So yeah, they have (in my mind at least) a tougher rep. Franciscans are supposed to be, well, Franciscan (make me a channel of your peace, etc.). Dominicans are more the (church) Law and Order types.
Of course, I could be wrong.
Or...
I could be NUANCED! But that's another story entirely...
When a holy site becomes more important to us that that which it represents, then it has become a false idol and should be treated as such.
It would be more accurate to say that the Dominicans served as personnel for Courts of Inquisition.
Dominicans were often trained as canonists - men versed in the Church's canon law.
In the inquisitorial courts there was an intersection of civil and canon law and Dominicans were often recruited to assist.
Among the Franciscans there was a long controversy over whether or not education was another form of earthly wealth which should not be desired for its own sake and perhaps should even be renounced as vanity. Among the Dominicans there was no such controversy and scholarship was encouraged throughout the order.
How do they tell each other apart? Do they have secret handshakes or decoder rings?
