If North Korea has nuclear weapons and the IRBM means to deliver them (even to Honolulu and Anchorage -- let alone Seattle, Portland, Frisco and LA), then you can be assured of this: they will not be attacked by US forces.
Attacking a nuclear-armed adversary is sheer madness.
Whether or not Iraq was developing "WMD's", I respect Bush's War against Iraq on the simple grounds that Saddam was training Hijack-Terrorists at Salman Pak (and, very possibly, trained the 9/11 terrorists therein -- the probative evidence is uncertain, but "close enough for government work").
However, when you are dealing with atomic weapons, different rules apply.
We ain't God. There are some things that the United States can't do.

The N. Koreans are blustering. They know that we wouldn't use nuclear weapons to attack them. There'd be no point in it. We have more than enough conventional weapons to target and destroy their nuclear facilities, and they wouldn't see a darned thing on their radar.
Not to mention, if N. Korea tries to start a war with the U.S. before China is ready to give up its economic ties to the U.S., China will invade N. Korea and put an end to the silly dictator.
Just one more comment. Has anyone else noticed that Dick Cheney and Colin Powell are in a much more serious mood than they were a couple of years ago? I think this is because of Iran and North Korea. Bush seems just a little more serious and Condi Rice is about the same. But what do you think about Cheney and Powell?
BTW, N. Korea has made that same threat before, against Seoul. It's nothing new.
Very very stupid thing to say to the Japanese. My guess is they have just shifted Japans policy greatly. There will be budget changes, the military will get all it wants.
The Japanese are not cowards, but are very honorable men. Cowards are weakened by threats, but Honorable Men get resolve.
We're holding back on striking North Korea not primarily because of what NK can do to us, but because of what NK and do to South Korea. The Seoul, South Korea metro area is located only 20 miles south of the DMZ. North Korea has thousands of fortified heavy artillery pieces, which can all reach Seoul, dug into the hills just north of the DMZ. NK has the capability to rain down tens of thousands of H&E artillery shells per hour on Seoul and its 10 million residents. This is the main reason we haven't struck NK's nuclear facilities yet. Kim Jong Il is basically an extortionist who holds South Korea hostage with his heavy artillery to prevent the US from removing his regime.
If I remember my history correctly, the inital Allied counter-attack in the Korean War pushed NK forces well over a hundred miles north of Seoul....out of artillery range. But Mao Tse Tung brought China into the war and pushed the allies back to the present DMZ. So China screwed up the Korean Peninsula and is responsible for the current unstable situation there. Ironically, Mao's most talented son was killed in a bomb and napalm attack by Allied planes in the final weeks of the war. (Was that Ted Williams or Jerry Coleman in that plane?)
North Korea makes these kinds of specific threats about once every year or two, and makes more minor threats on a daily basis. Actually, most of it is just boiler plate language used in past press statements and speeches.
It gets old after awhile.
I want to know what President Bush has in store for this imminent threat to our country. Why, this communist redoubt still serves as a reminder that so much things are left undone.
This is EXACTLY why you pre-empt your adversary.
Once the democRATS give them nuclear technology it's too late.
How much faith does GW have that he was willing to sacrifice his presidency (not that it will come to that, but 2 years ago, Iraq was a that large of a gamble) to make sure another NK isn't developed? He took down a country so the Dems couldn't give ANOTHER country nuclear capabilities.
Can't wait for the Israeli fireworks over Tehran.

Oh, good move North Korea -- get the Japanese pissed off. However bad the Japanese economy may be, they've got 10,000 times the resources of NK -- Japan will not take this threat lying down. I lived in Japan for 2 years in the late 1980s. Japan's been "dormant" compared to its historical outlook toward the world -- but if it chooses to, it can wipe NK from the map.
Look for Japan to become a major developer of anti-missile technology and/or partner with the U.S. in perfecting it. And something I've been predicting for some time may come true soon -- that the Japanese constitution will be revised to allow for a more proactive military presence in the world.

I'm far from being a pacifist, but we shouldn't go around blowing everyone who threatens us to bits. Libya should and can be an example to the rouge nations of the world, of how it benefits THEM to dismantle their WMDs. If that doesn't work, then, well, ... Of course I realize that some nations look to be beyond redemption. Still, force should always be the last resort.

Well, I am sure Japan is impressed with Clinton's foreign policy and diplomatic "successes" regarding N. Korea -- the same ones Kerry wants to continue: wait until rogue nations get nukes and WMD, instead of pre-empting them, before they become an imminent danger to the world.
