SEOUL — North Korea threatened Thursday to turn Japan into a "nuclear sea of fire" if the United States attacks it with nuclear weapons, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported, quoting a North Korean newspaper report.

Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of North Korea's Workers Party of Korea, said U.S. military bases in Japan would come under its attack in the event of a nuclear war.

"If the United States ignites a nuclear war, the U.S. military bases in Japan would serve as a detonating fuse to turn Japan into a nuclear sea of fire," the paper said in an article, according to Yonhap. .......... (snip)

If North Korea has nuclear weapons and the IRBM means to deliver them (even to Honolulu and Anchorage -- let alone Seattle, Portland, Frisco and LA), then you can be assured of this: they will not be attacked by US forces.

Attacking a nuclear-armed adversary is sheer madness.

Whether or not Iraq was developing "WMD's", I respect Bush's War against Iraq on the simple grounds that Saddam was training Hijack-Terrorists at Salman Pak (and, very possibly, trained the 9/11 terrorists therein -- the probative evidence is uncertain, but "close enough for government work").

However, when you are dealing with atomic weapons, different rules apply.

We ain't God. There are some things that the United States can't do.
Attacking a Nuclear-Armed Adversary is one of them.

That obviously depends on how could your intelligence is. If you know where all the nuclear weapons your enemy has are and they aren't in large numbers you have a good chance of taking them out in a first strike.

Considering the recent past track record in intelligence though it would give one very serious pause.

And people challenge Bush on calling NK part of the Axis of Evil? What do you have to do these days to be considered evil?

Can't.

If North Korea has the capability and the means to liquify Honolulu and Anchorage (or even Tokyo, for that matter), then no US President is ever going to seek an "Authorization of Force" or "Declaration of War" against them.

We ain't God, and we ain't Superman. No US President will ever seek an "Authorization of Force" or "Declaration of War" against a Nuclear-Armed Adversary.

Atomic Weapons and the Means to deliver them are the international, universal Ace Card.

The N. Koreans are blustering. They know that we wouldn't use nuclear weapons to attack them. There'd be no point in it. We have more than enough conventional weapons to target and destroy their nuclear facilities, and they wouldn't see a darned thing on their radar.

Not to mention, if N. Korea tries to start a war with the U.S. before China is ready to give up its economic ties to the U.S., China will invade N. Korea and put an end to the silly dictator.

Something to remember, you can deliver a nuke in many ways. No need for an IRBM. In fact using a missile requires that the weapon be made smaller. A more practical approach is by aircraft or surface vessel.

Attacking a Nuclear-Armed Adversary is one of them.

An assumption. Most likely a bad one.

Kill their leaders now! The people are starving and living in inhumane conditions. DPRK has no particular friend in the world that I know of. South Korea, much like west Berlin, would accept the responsiblity for reunification with a free North Korea.

Nope, we don't have any conventional weapon to target a deeply burried shelter in Mountains. And we will have onle one strike for free, a pre-emptive one. It's not the same as Tora Bora. They know how to do some tunnels and so on. Just remember the wars over there...

If Russia attacked us with nuclear weapons we would turn 5/8ths of the world into a wasteland, and their point is?

One can only assume since the start of the new fiscal year is upon us they want to ensure they get a piece of the fiscal year budget.
