Reports: Militant Spiritual Leader Killed

By JAMAL HALABY, Associated Press Writer

AMMAN, Jordan - The spiritual leader of the most active insurgency group in Iraq (news - web sites), Tawhid and Jihad, has been killed in a U.S. airstrike and his Jordanian family is preparing a wake, a Jordanian newspaper and Islamic clerics said Wednesday.

Sheik Abu Anas al-Shami, 35, was killed when a missile hit the car he was traveling in on Friday in the west Baghdad suburb of Abu Ghraib, said the clerics, who have close ties to the family. They spoke on condition of anonymity.

Al-Shami was an aide to Tawhid and Jihad's leader, the Jordanian militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The al-Qaida-linked group is blamed for some of the biggest attacks in Iraq, such as the bombing of the U.N. headquarters last year, and the beheadings of foreign hostages. Al-Zarqawi is believed to have personally decapitated the American hostage Eugene Armstrong on Monday.

Al-Shami, a Jordanian of Palestinian extraction who was also known as Omar Yousef Jumah, was believed to be the voice on several audio tapes that Tawhid and Jihad released via the Internet. In one such tape in August, a speaker identified as al-Shami said the militants planned to kill Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, soldiers and police officers.

"We will not allow you to destroy our hopes in this blessed holy war, and we will not let you steal our bright tomorrow, which is now appearing on the horizon," the speaker said on the tape.

The an independent Jordanian newspaper Al-Ghad quoted al-Shami's family on Wednesday as confirming the death. It said the family was preparing a wake in the east Amman suburb where al-Shami lived before he went to Iraq after the U.S.-led invasion last year.

The pan-Arab satellite television Al-Jazeera reported al-Shami's death earlier in the week, quoting unidentified relatives.

We all need to do much more ranting. How could they not know their world view is wrong when masked coward thugs saw off innocent peoples' heads and they in turn show the "softer side" of the "spiritual" leaders.

They use seductive tools for people who have felt guilty their whole lives because they've got it so good: they rationalize. Sounds something like this.

"These people are only doing what any rational person would do who has seen so much death and destruction. Theire homeland has been invaded, and is being held by an immoral country just to steal their oil. They want to live pure lives according to their faith, which is really just about sitting quietly in fields and looking at butterflies, which is what they'd be doing now if it wasn't for the Great Satan America bombing their children and ambulances."

These leftists have gone a couple of generations living off the security provided by dead American Patriots. They're soft because they have forgotten that freedom isn't free. In the security we have provided, they have the luxury to not worry about "isms" taking them out.

Good point, most of the wealthy Sunni and Shiite clerics drove top of the line, late-model Mercedes and BMW's.

What I was trying to point out is that Israel has a tactic of providing terrorists they want to kill with new cars via various means. These cars have transmitters hidden in them.

Maybe we have adapted that tactic in Iraq. When they get leery of getting new cars maybe we could give them a goat with a radio collar.

Great news, may he roast in hell---
BUT---

If we new what car this slime was riding in, why was he not scooped up and tortured without mercy until he revealed the hiding place of Zarqawi and his men?

>> When you kill enough of the enemy, they stop fighting. That's the problem with this war. The coalition is too squeamish about killing, unlike the enemy <<

"it looks like we are using intelligence on the ground and Israeli tactics to take the big guys down one at a time."

Heard on Fox tonight that we have a special forces unit after Zarqawi, sme as we did to get Saddam. They said we have taken down half or more of Zarqawi's command and control so far in the process. We're gonna get him.

I'd like you to explain why you would "Thank God" that we haven't killed our militant Islamist enemy in numbers equal to Dresden or Tokyo? Are you praying for their survival, in preference to your own?

I'd love to kill the evil Islamist cowards in numbers like that. However, your approach to levelling entire cities won't do it. No matter how much you insist it will.

"...your approach to levelling entire cities won't do it. No matter how much you insist it will."

It worked for Alexander.
It worked for the Romans.
It worked for Attila.
It worked for the Mongols.
It worked in the war against the American Indians.
It worked in the American Civil War.
It worked in WWI
It worked in WWII

It will certainly work against the Islamists..
It is very difficult being an effective militant Islamic warrior if your cities, infrastructure, Mosques, financial base, families, farms, businesses and homes have been destroyed...

If ever again we can herd the militants of Fallujah, Sadr City, Najaf, etc, etc.....into a definable area as we have in the past ---- we certainly could and should reduce that section of the city to rubble, and then attack again simply to watch the rubble bounce...

And YES -- even if a "cherished holy Mosque" is endangered..
This alone, will convince the people that resistance to the coalition or support of the Islamists comes at a horrible price....

Unless of course -- YOU and YOUR family are willing to send your children and grandchildren for the next 50 years to gently suppress the murdering bastards...

My family will no longer go to wars that are not being fought to WIN at the least possible cost in our blood.

I notice Vietnam was not in your list. God forbid I make the same comparison as Flipper, but that is indeed a war in which we cannot readily identify the enemy (Viet Cong) from the population at large.

It's much "easier" to fight a war when the enemy is a state or at least an identifiable group.

The enemy in Vietnam ... was the communist regime in the NORTH and their allies the Chinese and Russians.
The VC in the South, would have dried up and blown away, without the men, arms and material from the NORTH.
The NORTH, where we did NOT destroy their cities.

It was our previous most recent PC war..
We lost that one, remember?
That is why it wasn't on the list...
That was a war, were we won every major battle, and lost the war, because we FAILED to use our strength appropriately....

MILLIONS of our former allies were subsequently murdered by the communists or died in their attempt to escape the communists?

Remember?

I would rather the dying be done by the lunatics and the culture that bred them --- even if many innocents were among them, rather than see them deliver massive death and destruction to America as is their aim...

The Islamanazis weren't squeamish about attacking our cities or our innocents on 9/11.....
They are planning other and larger events.

Good. Then you identify the NORTH for me in this war, since you seem to have all the answers. Or are we back to "Nuke Mecca!" as a solution?

Forget it...

I wrongly assumed you had some sense...
I now see you don't....

Go back to sleep...
Perhaps asleep, you're in less danger.

In other words, you have no answer, so you're taking your ball and going home? But not before throwing out an insult or two. Semper Fi, Dude.
