Burkette boasted on the internet that he'd given the information to ex-Senator Max Cleland in the Kerry camp.

My guess is that Cleland was the 'unimpeachable source' that vouched for and then sent CBS, Boston Globe and USA Today to Burkette.

Just a little phone call to point the way without getting the Kerry fingers dirty.

I think your scenario makes sense. It's easy to see how it could play out in a way that Cleland would be involved enough to be "the source", but not really turn out to be.

The only thing is, other media identified Burkett almost immediately as having sent the docs--they also seemed to have copies of them. Do you think Cleland sent them around, but attached Burkett's name to them? Who sent copies from Kinkos, etc? There are questions like that which weren't answered at all. Who if anyone did Burkett obtain the docs from? I think Heldt is involved.
