This is an exerpt of an article about Burkett back when he was complaining about the "Bush records in the trash can," a story that has since been totally debunked.

In order to have been hospitalized, Burkett must have been certified by physicians as fitting into two categories:

1. Significantly mentallly ill and 2. A danger to himself or others.

A person is not hospitalized for mental illness unless they meet BOTH criteria.

This article was first published in the NY Times on Feb 12, 2004.

Rather's researchers had more than 7 months to check on their story source. They knew or should have known that had been certified as both severely mentally ill and a danger to himself or others.

.... and they still went with the story....

Mapes and Burkett may be the fallpeeples, but my gut hunch is that it's Rather's daughter who's the point person and cohourt for her father.

I think the daughter is the reason that ole Dan is frantically trying to orchestrate a cover-up with the ferocity of a lioness defending her cubs.

Not necessarily.

I've seen plenty who met the seriously mentally ill without being a danger to themselves or others hospitalized at their own request.

Well, if the guy was suffering from a serious mental disorder (could happen to anyone, after all) and even got hospitalized for it - has he been cured by now? After all, he's no longer in a hospital. Presumably he's deemed sane enough to have a driver's license, and to be held responsible for his doings.

Rush made a statement a week ago Friday - he said that the DNC received the documents, gave them to the Kerry campaign, who in turn gave them to Mapes - and ultimately to Dan Rather.

My theory is - Burkett dictated the "memos" to someone at the Travis County DNC (where Robin - Rather's daughter is affiliated) - the "memos" were then given to McAwful - who gave them to Kerry - who released them to CBS through Mapes - who is a producer in Dallas.

It's my understanding Mapes has been working on trying to make this a story for 4-5 years. Evidently, somebody knew this information and decided to make hay out of it. Like Goldberg said, Dan wanted it to be true so it was easy to fool him. But .. once he knew they were frauds .. he covered it up.

This will cost CBS their remaining credibility.

"1. Significantly mentallly ill and 2. A danger to himself or others."

Actually, that sounds like an excellent description of the mental condition of most of the lunatic libs in America.

I think Burkett is scum and that his finger is in the middle of this CBS cowpie. But being mentally ill and having been hospitalized in the past isn't what makes him contemptible. Plenty of fine, upstanding people have had mental health issues and the psych hospitals have seen their fair share of good human beings whose sole crime was a physically definable chemical imbalance.

Burkett should have been discounted (assuming he was the/a source) because of his record of partisanship and hatred of Bush. His past mental state and hospitalization, and that's assuming whatever his problem was is being treated and is under control, has nothing to do with anything, with all due respect.

Exactly, you don't just go visit for a few days. Not anymore. Judges won't even comitt without both criteria being met.
