Democrat slugs area GOP chief, GPD says

By LISE FISHER

Sun staff writer September 18. 2004 6:01AM

Politics in Gainesville turned rough and tumble Thursday night when, police say, a social behavior sciences instructor - a Democrat - punched the chairman of the Alachua County Republican Executive Committee in the face.

David Philip McCally, 55, of Gainesville faces misdemeanor battery and criminal mischief charges after he was accused of hitting both committee chairman Travis Horn, 32, and a life-sized, cardboard cutout of President George Bush.

The incident occurred at the Republican headquarters in downtown Gainesville at about 7:30 p.m.

McCally went into the office at 1212 N. Main St. and hit the face of the Bush cutout, a police report states. Afterward he argued outside with Horn, police reported, then punched him in the face. Police said there was a fight and Horn struck McCally several times "but was not the primary aggressor and fought only in an attempt to escape from further conflict."

McCally was released on his own recognizance after his arrest and has been ordered not to have contact with Horn, court records show.

But McCally said he wants to see Horn charged for kicking him.

McCally said he went into a nearby restaurant after going into the Republican office, and Horn was standing by the door cursing him. He went out, Horn continued to curse him and stepped too close. McCally said he hit Horn and let him get up. Then Horn gave him "a good one-two punch" and McCally went down. But Horn continued to kick him, McCally said.

"I've got the stitches and bruises to prove it," he said.

As for hitting the cutout, McCally said, "I don't like old brother George. Truthfully, I kind of did it lightheartedly. I was just walking over there to order chicken, and I saw the cutout and I just walked in there and punched it."

McCally is a part-time instructor in social and behavioral sciences at Santa Fe Community College who started in January, confirmed college spokesman Larry Keen. He will be "removed" from the classroom pending an administrative review on Monday, he said.

Records at the Alachua County Supervisor of Elections Office confirmed McCally's political party.

Reached Friday, Horn said, "I enjoy thoughtful debate with my counterparts on the left. I think this is what makes this country great, but when you cross the line with physical violence, it's absurd."

After hitting the cutout, Horn said McCally left the office where a Young Republicans meeting was taking place. When Horn went outside, he said McCally came up to him. "He proceeded to say how he had a Ph.D., and he was smarter than me. I'm a stupid Republican," and other comments laced with obscenities, he said.

Horn said he was hit and knocked into a wall.

His lips were cut and his nose injured.

"I then proceeded to defend myself," he said. "I used the minimum force necessary to subdue him."

The police report states Horn kicked McCally because McCally was holding on to Horn's legs.

Police happened to be pulling into the area at the time, Horn said. A police report states officers saw McCally throw what they later learned was the first punch.

"Of course I'm going to have a restraining order filed against him," Horn said. "I certainly will seek his removal from the classroom. Obviously he's shown a serious lack of judgment."

As for Horn's commitment to his political opinions, he said, "If I have to take a beating every day for George W. Bush to be president, I'll do that. My passion for my beliefs continues unabated."

McCally's punching exercises are a good way to limber up the ol' hamburger flipping arm.

...if he really want to punch, send him to Iraq. OTOH...No, He'll only endanger his fellow citizens. Yeah, Hamburger flipping is the perfect 1st F/T job for him...an entry level job w/PHD...and no perks/ed. loans to pay off...life really sucks.

I guess the very name of "Santa Fe" draws moonbats, even in Florida...

A fustrated 55-year old loser, a nobody, infuriated that a "rich kid" from Texas has gained power and prominence that he will achieve.

State legislatures that fund public colleges, including junior colleges, need to take a serious look at requiring affirmative action, a favorite concept of liberals, be applied to academic hiring. State colleges that do not diversify their staffs to include a proportionate number of moderate, conservative, or libertarian professors to that of the population at large will suffer a loss of state funding.

In the more conservative parts of the country, liberals tend to cluster in the teaching profession and college towns. It is past time that state legislatures look seriously at breaking these strongholds. Think of it as payback for school busing, which converted many central cities into black or Hispanic minority communities. Many of these central cities are now Democratic strongholds, even cities like Dallas, which was staunchly conservative 35 years ago.

It might be that I just haven't heard the news, but there seems to be this increasing vitriolic hatred and violence many dems have been showing. It's gotta be hard from them knowing what losers they've become.

A couple of months back I was lurking around DU and was shocked when I ran accross a thread where they were discussing the "Next Civil War" and how easy it was going to be to defeat the Conservatives.  They seem to think they are better connected to Law Enforcement and that they are better armed.

I fought the urge to register just to see if I could stir it up a little more... what fun that would have been!

You could, but I wasn't thinking of maiming them ... more like taking them like one would hunt turkeys.

well...They (turkeys/liberals) are "dumber than a sack of rocks/hammers", use tripwire/falling log traps.

"a social behavior sciences instructor"

Err, "social behavior"--not! I know the phrase is overused, but you really couldn't make this stuff up. Mrs PD

Seeing there's an opening for a social behavioral sciences instructor, maybe the college can hire an ex-felon.

The DemocRATS are losing it.

I'm seriously starting to fear what will happen when they lose again in November.

Seriously, is anyone cataloging all the Democratic Party's political violence and brownshirt acts of intimidation?

I think I start investing in pharmaceutical stocks right about now, given the way Democratic supporters acted in the last nine months. You KNOW that Democrats will buy mass quantities of anti-anxiety and anti-depressant pills after watching Senator Kerry go down in flames on November 2, 2004. :-/

"McCally is a part-time instructor in social and behavioral sciences at Santa Fe Community College who started in January, confirmed college spokesman Larry Keen."

His first field experiment was kind of a bust (pun), if he gets any jail time his next field experiment might be a real shocker.

I'm predicting this guy sticks with text book theory in the future - assuming he still has a job.

Just another all too common example of what the dim libs are are all about: Hypocrisy

Like spoiled little children if they don't get their way then they will throw a temper tantrum. And since sKerry is the epitome of that type then can you imagine how he would crack under the pressure that President Bush operates?? God protect us and keep GWB in office.

I want to see this Donk's dissertation.

One our local university Sociology professors wrote his on "Social Change Movements" and his students picket and protest anything they think they can use to get PR against *bigots, racists & homophobes* (tm) in the political center. The public HS social studies teacher has "Power to the People" posters in her classroom and teaches that Ruben "Hurricane" Carter is incarcerated only because he is black in a racist society.

My son, now almost 40, was in the 1st class to take Social Studies when it replaced Civics. The very first assignment was to complete a questionnaire on how the students differed w/their parents. Social Studies is Alinsky and Gramsci 101.

Do those morons at DU realize that many conservatives are former military who still work out, run and spend quality time at the dojo and rifle range? DU types have neither the training nor the discipline to be a serious threat.
