Newly released guard records contain letter from President Bush's father

WASHINGTON (AP) - A packet of Texas Air National Guard records newly released Friday showed that the commanding officer of President Bush's basic training unit took a special interest in him as a trainee and wrote to his father to praise his son.
Bush's father, then a congressman from Texas, said in reply to the commander, "That a major general in the Air Force would take interest in a brand new Air Force trainee made a big impression on me."
Bush went on to say that his son "will be a gung ho member" of the Air Force and that Air Force instructors had "helped awaken the very best instincts in my son."
The letter and other material were the latest in a stream of documents released about Bush's service three decades ago during the Vietnam War, when Bush's critics say he got preferential treatment as the son of a congressman and U.N. ambassador. Critics have also questioned why Bush skipped a required medical examination in 1972 and failed to show up for drills during a six-month period that year.
The White House has said repeatedly that all of Bush's Guard records have been disclosed, only to be embarrassed when new documents have turned up. The long-running story took an unusual turn when CBS uncovered documents purportedly showing that Bush refused orders to take a physical examination in 1972 - but then the authenticity of the documents came under doubt.
In addition to the letter from Bush's father, the latest documents contain news releases that the Texas Air National Guard sent to Houston newspapers in 1970 about young Bush, then a second lieutenant and new pilot. "George Bush is one member of the younger generation who doesn't get his kicks from pot or hashish or speed," the news release said. "Oh, he gets high, all right, but not from narcotics."
Three decades later, a new book by Kitty Kelley has alleged that Bush used cocaine while he was a student at Yale University and later at Camp David while his father was president.

This is one heck of a hit piece. Going from that statement to Kelley's screed is one miserable piece of journalism. And, I'm going to write to let ol' Matt know.
It is a stupid act, not a desparate act. It will not be the last one of those I can assure you.
The letter and response go to Bushs character and pride of a grateful father. The media and libs can try to make someting of this but it will go over as well as their contention that bush could not be in the Guard and Air Force at the same time.

Eventually it's going to dawn on people that if Dubya really wanted to use connections to escape service & danger he made lousy use of it going into the TANG for a six-year committment?
With all this clout why didn't he give a job for say six months as a journalist on a highly protected military base in Vietnam. Then he could claim to be a Vietnam vet if he was thinking about a political future?
Or why didn't he use his pull to get a job as a staff flunky in Washington or Europe or Japan? What kind of committment would that have been? Two years? I could be wrong.
The more I hear about Dubya the more I like the guy.
I'd wager that the reason this garbage is trickling out like this is because these documents are not a part of Bush's official file.

We've actually seen this article from the "Houston papers". In other words, nothing new was uncovered except they thought GWB was a great guy. (Oh, I know, "Bush's critics" will say they were just saying that).

AP filed a FOIA suit against the military & a judge recently ruled that the military had to dig for records & turn everything they found to AP.
Or how about go to Nam, make up three phony wounds, and get shipped back home as a "war hero"?
I know AP intends this as an attack on President Bush, but I don't see anything bad about it. They are really reaching.

Killian already stated that Bush's 35-10 (36-2903 now) was always above standards, which is one of the things his father admired about Bush, his professionalism. I know you are being tongue in cheek, but perhaps the MSM will read this thread and save the bandwidth in case they come across another favorable document that the Pentagon finds.

Geeze! His father was an American pilot in WWII. Perhaps it's the liberal mind set but why can none of them seem to comprehend that Bush the Younger just might have admired and respected his father, Bush the Elder, so very much that he wanted to follow in those very large footsteps?
