HURRICANE IVAN--FREEPER CHECK IN, RECOVERY, AID REQUEST THREAD
Self | 17 Sep 2004 | Commish

Posted on 09/17/2004 7:04:29 AM PDT by commish

Since we have had numerous FREEPERS in the area effected by Hurrican Ivan, I thought it would be good to start a thread for FREEPERS to check in.

Please place any damage reports, requests for assistance, etc here.

We were incredibly fortunate Darlin' as the winds were howling most of the day Thursday. We didn't lose power, but many did. However, the fine folks that fix these things have done a tremendous job and all power in our area is restored. I understand that the beautiful, historic area in Dothan proper was heavily damaged when numerous 100 year old trees fell on and around homes.

same here in Montgomery, the Old Cloverdale section lost a lot of trees :-(.

Just heard from Wife's sister in Luverne, AL. They just got phone service back this morning, still no power there -- lost about 10 trees in here yard but no damage to house.

Pittsburgh/SW Pa and West Virginia are messes...flooding EVERYWHERE... record 1 day rainfalls over the area, after already saturated ground from previous hurricane have led to lots and lots of flooding, landslides... Rivers predicted to crest around 6pm today well above flood stages.

Fortunately no deaths reported to my knowlege in the are, but its an absolute mess in this area. Streets were literally rivers.

This area has minor and area specific flooding all the time, but this is like nothing I've seen here.

I was down in Ft. Pierce, FL this week, helping my Mom who suffered the double whammy of losing her husband and her home being damaged by Hurricane Frances during a single week's time. After taking care of the arrangements, paperwork, repairing her home, getting the utilities back online, etc., my sons and I drove home to Connecticut, being chased the whole way by Hurricane Ivan. We drove through the outer rain bands coming up through North Carolina and Virginia, and were just a couple of hours ahead of the tornados in Washington, DC. As I write this, it is raining cats and dogs outside with thunder rumbling and strong winds. Man, I am glad to be home!

Chattanooga area checking in - we had about 7-8 inches of rain. Scattered power outages, but nothing major here. I lost my cable (and internet) for about 16 hours, and had to resort to dialup internet and local TV Thursday night. Thankfully, I had Neal Boortz and Rush to entertain me yesterday.

Flooding occurred in several low-lying areas, as it did a year or so ago when we had the "big flood". Some roads closed by flooding, but they should be opening up within a day or two. By this morning, water had already receded a couple of feet. No problems at the Meyer residence.

Those on the ground in Pensacola will disagree. One federal official has said that only the WTC exceeds Ivan in devastation.

The more photos that get out the worse it looks.

I've been thinking about you since the other day. Try not to worry, they may not be able to call at this time and are probably busy helping with cleanup.

I'm praying for you, him, and the others who suffered the storm.

Our local weather dude shows two systems north of Jeanne and said she would either go directly east or west depending on position. Also said many more "ifs" with Jeanne so we watch and wait.

Prayers Answered!

(forgot to post on this thread, too busy trying to remember who I've updated *L*)

He was able to call last night. They had been moved to Tate HS, as they were consolidating the shelters (that and the roof at Lipscomb Elementary had many leaks) He had watch from 8pm-12am the night of landfall so he actually SLEPT through it *L* Go figure. But he's ok. Said he'd be back to base in a day or two if all went well.

So glad to hear that. I'm sure you were able to sleep much better last night after hearing from him.

Thanks for the links. The damage is so bad I started a whole new thread just for that.

Pics taken by sherriff's office

Maybe if several could take one gallery we could post a lot of pics. I'm going to have to leave the house in a bit.

Hopefully everything will be fine. Shezza (my sister) & I and our families vacationed at Eden in Perdido Key. I love Gulf Shores! This just breaks my heart!! Our parents live in Tuscaloosa, they made out just fine. Only had a few limbs from some small trees and pine cones scattered about.

Prayers for everyone involved...

Those photo's are just heartbreaking. makes the trees down and power outages here in central Alabama seem trivial. :-(
