Yup. Single-handedly took it off a VC while deep inside Cambodia, alone, on a super-secret mission during Christmas 1968 that President Nixon had personally ordered him to undertake when he met with him in the Oval Office at Thanksgiving, 1968. For that matter, Kerry was injured on the mission. Still has the Band-Aid to prove it.

When I returned from one of my Vietnam tours I had some
paper work done that allowed me to handcarry a CHICOM rifle
back to the States. I subsequently gave it to a friend years
ago but I legally brought it back to the states.

And, (lawyer types would need to apply this to each state I guess) isn't it illegal to even HAVE a functional machine gun in your house? ("assault weapon" is just a fast rifle with a long clip, while an AK-47 IS a machine gun, right?)

Probably an SKS, semi-auto and perfectly legal. They were much more common than the Chi-com AK at the time (though Charlie had lots of Soviet-bloc AKs).
