Please help me out here but I seem to remember Dan Rather would refer to himself on occasion as "this old Marine". As I remember he never was a Marine or had gotten washed out. Would this be a good time for him to release his own service records?
Can anyone vouch for accuracy or is my memory suspect?
I think that Hillary quote got garbled. I think she said she once got "porked in a Marina."
No, you've got it mixed up. Hilliary was pork in a marina.
Technically, he can ... and apparently he has. When he does so, though, he's not telling the truth.
And that makes him ...

...
the sort of person who would insist that a Microsoft Word document was produced on a typewriter, and a TXANG base, in 1971.
Where I come from, we call those folks "liars".
ROFL! Be sure to type it up in Times New Roman, and center the date
One of many. I seem to remember she stated that she was named after Edmund Hillary.
Finally, on May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first two men to stand on top of the world. To learn more about their adventure take our interactive trek that recreates the historic expedition
Hillary Diane Rodham, Dorothy and Hugh Rodham's first child, was born on October 26, 1947.
Edmund Hillary was not mentioned in the Chicago Tribune in 1947 and the first mention of him in the New York Times did not occur until 1953. Seems as if peacocks, Hillary, Dan and J effing K, think alike.
"Maggot!!" seems to come to mind...and Danny Boy never made it past the maggot phase...to this day.
BTTT
When people ask me if I was ever in the service I reply that "the Marine Corps politely asked me to leave boot camp."
You'd think I'd just say "no" and leave it at that however, that episode was so humiliating to me that it's become meaningful and feel that, though I was never a Marine, the Marines taught me a lesson that turned out to be important.
It's impossible to imagine someone saying they were a Marine after being washed-out: Rather's an embarrassment to all us losers who failed basic.
How much do you suck if you're an embarrassment to losers?
Sounds like you just took a trip down Mammary Lane.....
I like the Marine Corps. cover like the one worn by Clint Eastwood as Gunny Highway in "Heartbreak Ridge".
I've been thinking of hunting one down but I'd like to know first...would it be bad form to wear it if one has never been a Marine?
As much as I like the cap, I would wear one if I'd be p!$$ing off some of the Nation's Finest.
You showed up and you tried. Perhaps you made a mistake or simply had a physical makeup that didn't match the demands of bot camp. You still are a child of God and apparently have learned from your disappointment.
And know that, whatever your past, you have a perfect future before you if you choose to make it happen. Please keep the eternal perspective and know that our time here on earth is one of testing, making mistakes, faltering, and earning our way back to the presence of our Heavenly Father -- who knows and loves you, awaits your return, and hopes that you will choose His path so that you can sit on His right hand as one of His children. May He bless you for your honesty and humility -- two very rare and much-needed commodities in these troubled times -- and give you the courage to move on in His service. All the best.....
I wouldn't if I were you...
It has the eagle, globe and anchor emblem on the front and Marines don't take kindly to people wearing the emblem that they didn't earn...
Just my opinion

Rather certainly has experience with the military. During the Korean War, when men could be drafted out of college, Dan Irvin Rather joined the Army Reserves while attending Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas, thus avoiding the possibility of being drafted. On graduating in 1954, well after the Korean War was over and the killing had ended, Rather quit the reserves and enlisted in the Marine Corps. (This is the same national broadcaster who, night after night during the 1988 presidential campaign, hammered Republican vice presidential candidate Dan Quale for avoiding Vietnam by joining the National Guard,) Although the press often refers to Rather as an ex-Marine, he did not finish Marine recruit training. He joined the Marines on January 22, 1954, but was discharged less than four months later, on May 11,for being medically unfit. (As a boy, Rather had suffered from rheumatic fever.)
I would never even consider wearing it if it sported the USMC emblem. I just was wondering if that type of cap, which is very distinctive, worn plain and by itself without any adornment would raise anyone's ire.
Oh, now if you find one that doesn't have the emblem on the front I wouldn't think anyone would have a problem...
In fact you might find one at one of the Army/Navy surplus stores without the emblem...
But the one that Eastwood is wearing is a Marine Corps cover and it definitely has the emblem on it
Dan Rather washed out of boot camp....I am reminded of meeting up with my drill instuctor in Quatico several after graduating from MCRD PI. My drill instructor asked me if I remembered a guy name Rather (not his real name). How could I forget, he was the FU that went crazy and did the sea bag drag about TD#4. My former DI and now my buddy, went into a story about how he was back home in NC at a bowling alley when some cute girl came up to him and asked him if he was a Marine (back in those days only Marines wore high and tights). She said then went into a story about how her ex-boyfriend joined the Marines and came home a nut case without finishing bootcamp.
Anyway, come to find out it was my old fellow recruit, Rather (reminder this is not his real name), who couldn't learn his left from his right and pi$$ed his trousers (literally) when he had four DI's in his face.
BTW, the current CBS anchor reminds me of that recruit.
Rather was from Wharton Texas, and if he joined in Texas, He would have gone to MCRD San Diego for Boot. One is not part of the brotherhood until completeing Boot Camp.

It was a different world when Jarhead1957 and I went through, but somehow the Marine Corps has been able to keep shaping men's minds and bodies in spite of all the PC crap since the late '50s.
They're proving this in Iraq every day.
The ones I saw washout in '58 were simply unable to accept the mental conditioning required.
Some of them tried again and made it.
Marines don't like bed wetters. Back in the 50's it was one reason to be washed out of Boot Camp, so I doubt if Rather, a bed wetting liberal, ever made it through boot camp.

THE WALL WITHIN --- Dan Rather always lies.
