If CBS does come out with a "documents fake, but contents real" position, the suits at CBS are dumb as a sack of hammers. That will NOT end the attack on CBS.

Missing three deadlines now reminds me of hearing a jury scream and shout through an oak door to the jury room. We all KNOW that there is a knock-down, drag-out fight going on inside the black box in New York. The only question is when, not whether, CBS will cave.

CBS will continue to bleed credibility, and its parent Viacom will continue to bleed money, until Dan Rather's head is on a platter. I think the lawyers and the suits know that is true. And the only question is, how bad will it get before CBS recognizes reality and dumps Rather to save what's left of its corporate hide.

That's the "dog ate my homework" defense...and we all know how well that works...SeeBS' credibility will take its last few swirls 'round the bowl on its way out the hole.

I'm guessing the delay is due to internal dissension at CBS over the content of the statement. There must be some significant differences of opinion over exactly what the statement should say. They probably floated an internal draft earlier today, and it likely made some people very unhappy. I 'spose thay are rather (no pun intended) frantically trying to craft a compromise statement with which everyone can live.

That's not likely to be easy, which explains the delay.

Billybob:

I'd bet that the ones who are holding out for a full retraction and a big time firing are Viacom's securities lawyers. Can you say Sarbanes-Oxley? Can you say material event that might adversely affect the value of the stock? Can you say 8-K? '34 Act?
