CBS punted.
Obviously, they could not come to an agreement on how best to lie.

Now I know why they waited for Limbaugh and Hannity to finish their national radio shows before releasing this.

Well, don't we all feel silly.

This statement makes the past 6 hours of mockery seem childish. Clearly they authenticated the documents or they wouldn't be on air!

... but I believe that moment would represent the moment CBS News jumped the shark.

Nah, It was when Gunga Dan said "I think he’s an honest man....I think at core he’s an honest person....I think you can be an honest person and lie about any number of things."

Proof that the brain trust of CBS news is deficient. It took them all day to come up with a phony investigation of phony documents based on phony suppositions.

That's what I believe.

We have to be careful in repudiating this woman.

Other the GOP collectively looks like a bunch of bullies.

CBS has planned for this, I think. They're trotting this woman out to give Rather's scam some cover.

"We established to our satisfaction that the memos were "accurate" or we would not have put them on television. ..."

ACCURATE? How about "legitimate"? How about "NOT FORGED"? I smell a lawyer.

Here we go: "Though the documents were forged, they still express the thoughts on Killian at the time and it up to President Bush to address their contents as if they were not forged."

Don't forget we are the choir in here. The masses will see a nice old lady who says the documents are fake but what they say is true. Rather will say "See - I told you so. Now its time for Bush to answer the questions." The masses will then wonder why Bush hasn't answered the questions (even though they have been answered - its the preception, not the facts that matters). It then becomes way too complicated for the masses and they say - OK - Bush was AWOL - he's no different than Kerry. And that's all that Kerry wanted with this thing - he got what he wanted - Bush is dragged down to his level. The MSM then covers nothing but the Bush AWOL story.

This is kind of a modified hang out. They are implicitly admitting that they were wrong, but can't state that they were negligent.

Sheesh, didn't they learn anything from Watergate about how the coverup is worse than the crime? If they had admitted they were wrong about the documents last Friday, they would have been a lot better off.

Or they're stalling in the hopes that Killian's secretary changes her story about the memos being fake.

Well, my guess is that Mr. Rather was leaving turns out to be completely wrong.

It is not clear why it took so long and so many blown self-imposed deadlines to come out with "we are still convinced that the memos are legitimate." That is non-news -- why not let the furore die away a bit, instead of stirring it up with this theatrical non-news?

littlegreenfootballs has the words of an authentic Killian memo about Bush:

Lt Bush is a dynamic outstanding young officer. He clearly stands out as a top notch fighter interceptor pilot. Lt Bush is possessed of sound judgement, yet is a tenacious competitor and an aggressive pilot. He is mature beyond his age and experience level as evidenced by his recent participation in the unit firing deployment.

Link doesn't work (unavailable per yahoo):

I think they spent those 6 hours trying to forge better documents. CBS workers must feel a lot like Kerry supporters right now: embarrassed.
