1) CBS will once again stand by their "story" saying the documents aren't important.
2) They will get someone to "support" the general messge of their story.
In effect, they will continue to cover their backside.

Then CBS's boss's boss's boss (the wife of viacom's chairman, in other words) found out, and NOW the fighting begins.
Viacom is pounding desks demanding Rather resign.
Dan Rather'ed not resign. He thinks he can Kerry this through election day, and is screaming in the same conference room.
If the statement had been released on time, then, yes it would be more stonewalling.

After all he DID say last Friday, regarding their denial of the docs being FAKE:
"If there are any further developments regarding these documents, we will report it."
