According to Laurie Dhue at the bottom of the hour all flights are grounded at LAX due to a "radio problem"...

Do you know how many, and exactly which ones are down?

All I know is what I've read on this thread. I am not yet an instrument-rated pilot (in fact, instrument ground school was cancelled this semester 'cause only two people registered, grr...) but I have interacted with Cleveland Center during my training.

For clarification. When I started this thread I meant to say that......

"A Moose bit Laurie Dhue on her bottom and it was hugh"

Oh yeah! Almost forgot.....something else about all air traffic out west being grounded due to a radio problem...

Maybe you're the one that should relax capt'n. Hehe.

I am totally relaxed, as I would be if I were flying near LA tonight. I never wear a tin-foil hat, and I have seen plenty of odd things flying around for 27 years. But when I see something I have seen before, it strikes me as "normal". That is the way airline pilots work: even stressful things are supposed to be treated as previously experienced events, because they are. As an industry, we don't even use the phrase "emergency procedures" any longer, because we are trained to handle whatever comes our way.

Experience counts son.

So comm AND radar down? Isn't the backup for one, the other?

Well, if radar fails, then flights make position reports over navigation landmarks and the controllers keep track of who's where based on their reports.

If an airplane's radios go out, there's a procedure for that.

I don't know what the procedure is for a whole Center's radios going out, except for diverting incoming flights before they reach the affected area, and stopping other flights from departing.

My husband is also an airline pilot, trained first as a naval aviator. He loves when a light illuminates or something isn't going according to procedure. He misses those days of actually flying his a/c.

I nominate this thread for the Quickest Descent into Silliness by a Serious Thread Ever (you never should have put 'Laurie Dhue' and 'bottom' in the same line).

Thanks for trying to be a calming influence, but in these times of HIGH ALERT, this is not only unusual, it's downright scary.
