According to Laurie Dhue at the bottom of the hour all flights are grounded at LAX due to a "radio problem"...

I'm hoping this will be cleared up by tomorrow a.m., early.

I have friends flying out of JWA to Detroit...they've planned this trip for a LONG time...YIPES.

We heard on the local news (hotel across the street from LAX) that both the main power and the backup had failed, apparently quite unusual.

BTW, if they *say* there's a 4-hour delay tonight what are the odds a flight scheduled for tomorrow a.m. will depart on time?

this is not a total failure, they have backup power

The link posted in #20 from NBC4 says Palmdale's backup power has failed, too.

My guess is that the early flights may be affected because of delayed arrivals. A significant number of crews on any given day are not originating, which means if they are leaving an airport, they arrived there the night before. If they are delayed 4+ hours like they are saying, even IF there is a full restoration in the next few hours, there will be crew rest delays in the morning. Just a thought. This kind of thing happens in the east and mid-west a lot in the winter with snow storms etc.

I'll admit...plenty of "tin foil" ignorance here...this is disturbing.

We work on experience, and this is an experience that we have all had.

Glad to hear that soft. I guess I can relax now.

Lack of arriving traffic at LAX, SNA, SAN and such would be due to the ground stop being put into effect. Any inbound flights in the air before the ground stop have been allowed to proceed, any flights due to take off after ground stop went into effect have been delayed. This applies only to traffic above 18,000 ft I believe. Shorter commuter flights are still flying because they would not need to operate above 18,000.

Thanks. That makes sense. I really do want to get home tomorrow and really don't want to pay for another night in a hotel.

So you're saying because of Laurie Dhue's radio problem all Fox flights are cancelled?

If true, it would mean that all traffic in LA Center airspace would be looking for a way out and landing short of the destination in Southern California. Rest assured, the aircraft have communications with the ground, even with a total shutdown of LA Center. At the very least, the FAA can communicate with most airliners now using datalink through company systems, advising good frequencies etc. that could be worked by other controllers.

The last time this happened at New York Center it took until well the next day for things to get back to normal.

Wendell Goller was with him. Air Force One got off, but the press is still grounded.
