According to Laurie Dhue at the bottom of the hour all flights are grounded at LAX due to a "radio problem"...

Same here with JWA...nothing has landed that I've heard. I just sat outside for a bit to see...nothin'.

After thinking of Laurie Dhue Whacka Dhue Whacka Dhue Whacka Dhue...That is the first thing I thought of too. How do you get the planes out of the air without creating a panic or tipping your hand?

Ditto for pulling mine Mod if need be on LLSS priority.

My sister just put her granddaughter on a plane in Seattle to Las Vegas and after she bucked traffic on the 2 hour drive back home, they called and told her to come back and take over the care of the 8 year old little girl. This is after they requested that she, my sister, stay in the terminal while the plane taxied to the tarmac. So now she's on her way back to SEA TAC.

I have no idea what this is, but I do have doubts that a bird can take out power to LAX and then fly away.

Apparently, the comm outage is with Center, which handles the en-route part of IFR longer flights, not short flights made mostly by the smaller planes (either VFR or IFR just using Approach ATC)

"However, it increases the separation required between airplanes; instead of 29 landings per hour per runway, you might get 12."

Yowsa, I hope they have fuel figured for that cause man that would be a real mess.

Uh...how do I ask this?

On your FReep page, you mention that you chew your own feet? Can you expand on this? I mean...is this a compulsion or a habit of some sort?

If Tom Clancy wrote a book about this scenario, we're in big trouble! (just kidding)

I don't think this is a "usual" at all..

What I meant is that this happens from time to time. It is NOT unmanageable, and some of the posts here show quite a bit of tin foil ignorance. In other words, IT AIN'T A CRISIS. Sheesh.

This is not that unusual.

I do not doubt you are a pilot, but I'd say this is *not* usual.

I had no idea how big of an area is serviced by these communication centers.

Here's an example, Minneapolis Center:

Center controls all flights above 18,000 feet, and interacts with local towers, and Approach and Departure Control, for moving flights from the ground up to their space.

Any aircraft operating under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) within the confines of this airspace is controlled by air traffic controllers at Minneapolis Center. This includes all sorts of different types of aircraft: privately owned single engine aircraft, commuter airlines, military jets and commercial airlines.

On your FReep page, you mention that you chew your own feet?

Ever been typing away in a furious rebuttal and realize the post you where replying to was agreeing with you? When stuck with your foot in your mouth, make it look good and chew. I always said (and Dan Rather agrees), if you are going to dig a hole, make it a deep one.

I just dropped someone off at San Diego around 5:30 and drove home - took about an hour to get back. As soon as I walked in, she was calling to tell me the news. She is in a long line to see what her options are - I'm expecting to make another roundtrip here shortly....

Key words: that unusual. I have seen this a number of times when I have been flying, as has EVERY commercial pilot flying. We work on experience, and this is an experience that we have all had... so, yes, it is not that unusual.

Relax.
