Iran Reiterates Its "total Sovereignty" Over Three Gulf Islands

TEHRAN, Sep 14 (AFP)
Iran reiterated Tuesday its "total sovereignty" over three Gulf islands claimed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), state media reported.
"Any claims against the territorial integrity of Islamic Republic of Iran and its possession of its regional waters, air space or economy are condemned," foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi was quoted as saying in reaction to a final declaration from a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit.
"The three islands of the Greater and Lesser Tunbs as well as Abu Musa are inseparable parts of Iranian soil," Asefi asserted.
According to the Kuwaiti news agency KUNA, ministers from the GCC states meeting in Saudi Arabia on Monday renewed their support for the United Arab Emirates regrading the "three islands occupied by Iran".
Iran has controlled the three islands since the withdrawal of British forces from the region in 1971.
The UAE was established in 1971 following Britain's pullout from the region, shortly after Tehran took control of the islands situated roughly halfway between the two countries.
The GCC groups the gas- and oil-rich states of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Thats pretty much my take. They are conducting cold war style maneuvers in a star wars world. Makes life easier whenever we have to go and take them down.
I'm trying to follow up and get some of that data. There is strong probablity of ONE incident/blast being recorded. There has been less support for the second event / seismic record.
I've finally found seismic data for Sep 8 & 9 for the area. Initial analysis of data from two stations (one in S. Korea and one in China) suggests two potential events small enough not to be plotted as an earthquake (<3.0 mag). The first occured 8 Sep 04 at about 23:45 local, the second event occured 10 Sep 04 at about 02:00 local. Since the second event is outside of the window, the first event will be evaluated more closely. Unfortunately, data quality available via internet is less than desirable and these times will need to be cross cheched against the reported times. More to follow.

A senior Russian official met North Korea’s Kim Jong-il on Monday in the communist leader’s second public encounter with foreigners in as many days after months of privacy.
Sergei Mironov, chairman of Russia’s Federation Council, the upper chamber of parliament, handed Kim a letter from President Vladimir Putin, the North’s official KCNA news agency said.
On Sunday, Kim also met a Chinese delegation for his first reported meeting with foreigners since a secretive trip to China in April. A train explosion in North Korea killed at least 170 people just after Kim returned from that trip.
That meeting was the first reported reception given to visitors by the North Korean leader since he returned from Beijing, a South Korean official told Reuters.
The meeting with top Russian and Chinese officials highlights Kim’s focus on China as his main ally but his desire not to alienate Moscow, a communist-era patron that shares a tiny border with the North.
Kim can go many months without publicly meeting foreigners, although regional diplomats say he does meet the Russian and Chinese ambassadors privately.

BEIJING : Chinese President Hu Jintao has promised to strengthen relations with North Korea as his special envoy returned from Pyongyang amid a flurry of diplomatic activity aimed at securing another round of nuclear talks.
In a message conveyed by envoy Li Changchun to North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Il, Hu said China was willing to work with its neighbour to "strengthen and deepen" friendly cooperative relations, the Xinhua news agency said Monday.
China also wanted to "strengthen coordination and cooperation in regional and international affairs, with both countries understanding and supporting each other, and seek mutual development and mutual benefit to both peoples".
Li, a member of the Chinese Communist Party's powerful nine-strong top committee, returned to Beijing after the four-day "official goodwill visit", Xinhua said.
No details were given on whether any agreement was reached in scheduling another round of six-nation nuclear talks.
The visit was seen as part of last-ditch efforts to persuade Pyongyang to meet the other five parties as scheduled this month for a fourth round of talks aimed at resolving the standoff over the North's nuclear weapons program.
Pyongyang has recently expressed skepticism in the usefulness of the discussions and questioned the Americans' intentions.
It has also hinted the next round of talks, between the two Koreas, Japan, China, Russia and the United States, could be jeopardised by a recent admission by Seoul that South Korean scientists carried out nuclear experiments.
US diplomat James Kelly was holding meetings with Chinese officials in Beijing Monday and would likely get a briefing on Li's visit.
"It's pretty much the same thing, global and bilateral issues, which would include North Korea," a US embassy spokeswoman said regarding the content of discussions.
British foreign office minister Bill Rammell is also in Pyongyang and is expected to return to Britain via Beijing Tuesday.
The nuclear stand-off flared in October 2002 when the United States accused North Korea of operating a nuclear weapons programme based on enriched uranium, violating a 1994 agreement.
Pyongyang has denied running the uranium-based program but has restarted its plutonium program.

Caught up (finally!) and bookmarking!
I've pretty much finished my preliminary review of the available seismic records for Sep 8 & 9. The one hopeful signal appears to be linked to the 6.0 quake near the south coast of Honshu Japan. There is a much smaller event approximately 12 -15 minutes before the arrival of waves from the 6.0 Japan quake that is better separated out on the China seismograph than the Korean (farther away). Without better reported time(s) for the blast(s), I am unable to reduce it any further.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "In memory of that day, some UT students wanted to place a memorial to honor the victims. On Tuesday night, these students met and placed 3,025 flags in the amphitheater between the Humanities buildin and the library - one flag for each victim. The memorial was beautiful, and very moving. People walking through were noticeably affected by it. One would assume that it was a gesture everyone could agree on.
Unfortunately, this was not the case. Late last week, an individual or group of individuals vandalized the memorial. They removed every flag, and moved them to the plaza, where they planted them again. They arranged them to spell out "The World Suffers." They also chalked various antiwar and anti-Bush slogans on the side of the Humanities building and on the pavement. Obviously, their message was that the world suffered because of the United States, not because of 9/11. Implicitly, it stated that we got what we deserved."

PENTECOSTAL LEADERS RELEASED IN IRAN
News comes after church urged prayers

TEHRAN, IRAN (ANS) -- Ten Pentecostal pastors and elders of Iran’s Assemblies of God Church arrested last week have been released, a Christian news agency reported late Monday, September 13.
Compass news agency, which has close contacts with persecuted Christians, quoted an unidentified Iranian source as saying that the group was released Sunday "quite late in the night."
They were detained four days earlier together with 70 other Assemblies of God representatives, when police raided their meeting at a church center in Karaj, 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of the capital Tehran.
Iranian security forces reportedly blindfolded all men and women present and interrogated them. All detainees were released by nightfall except for the 10 pastors and elders, the church confirmed.
PRAYERS FOR RELEASE
News about their release came just hours after Springfield based U.S. Assemblies of God World Missions (AGWM) urged its supporters to pray for the detained group.
"Iranian brethren contacted AGWM to call the Body of Christ to prayer," said Mark Hausfeld, Area Director for AGWM's Central Eurasia Missions in a statement obtained by ASSIST News Service (ANS).
Compass quoted church sources as saying that "they were not given any reason for their arrest," although they were asked "many questions about themselves and each other."
Due to close police surveillance, the 10 leaders have not made direct contact with other evangelical believers since their release, Compass reported.
ORDAINED MINISTERS
Six ordained ministers were named among the freed prisoners, as Vartan, Soren, Harmik, George, Omid and Farhad. Another two men serving as pastors and two church elders were identified as Neshan, Hamid, Henry and Robert.
Since its declaration as an Islamic state in 1979, Iran has clamped down harshly on its Protestant citizens. The murderers of three of Iran’s leading Protestant pastors 10 years ago have never been brought to justice, Compass said.
"Assemblies of God leader Rev. Haik Hovsepian-Mehr was murdered in January 1994, shortly after launching a successful international campaign to free Mehdi Dibaj, a long-time convert to Christianity jailed for nine years. Six months later, Dibaj was also killed, followed days later by the disappearance and murder of Rev. Tateos Michaelian, a Presbyterian pastor," recalled Compass.
DEATH PENALTY
Under Islamic law, apostates who leave Islam are subject to the death penalty. Iran is one of the over 200 countries where AGWM claims to be represented by 4,000 people, including 1,900 appointed missionaries, 600 missionary associates and 1,500 missionary children. T
The Pentecostal denomination supporting AGWM has roughly 50 million members and adherents with 250,000 churches and preaching points worldwide, according to Assemblies of God estimates.
Iranian representatives of the church had expressed concern that authorities may prepare a new massive crackdown on evangelicals in the Islamic nation.
