UK arrests over 'dirty bomb plot'
http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/09/26/britain.arrests.reut/index.html
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- British police said on Saturday they had arrested four men under anti-terrorism legislation after a tip-off from a newspaper which said the suspects tried to buy explosives for a dirty bomb.
Three of the men were arrested in a raid on a hotel in Brent Cross, north London, on Friday and the fourth was seized later the same day at his home, also in north London.
"All four were arrested under section 41 of the Terrorism Act, on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism," London's Metropolitan police said in a statement.
They said they had been acting on information provided by the News of the World newspaper, which said one of its reporters had infiltrated a gang trying to buy radioactive material for a Saudi Arabian who it said might be linked to al Qaeda.
The tabloid newspaper said the Saudi was prepared to pay £300,000 ($540,600) for a kilogramme of "red mercury," a mysterious radioactive substance which is rumored to have been developed by Russian scientists during the Cold War.
The paper said one of its reporters made contact with an Indian-born banker and a Somali -- the head of the gang -- who wanted to buy bomb-making material for a client in the Middle East who they said supported "the Muslim cause."
As the staunchest ally of the United States in its war on terror, Britain has long seen itself as a potential target of an attack like the ones on New York, Washington, Bali and Madrid.
Hundreds of suspects have been arrested under the country's far-reaching anti-terrorist legislation, passed in 2000, but only a handful have been convicted.

Ahhh but that also adds up to a potential benefit. It limits the avenues of approach into areas or choke points that can be exploited with artillery, air power and potentially.......nukes. Yes, the Arabs may have solved their equipment troubles, but the Israelis have had the time to upgrade theirs as well. Plus, they have a benefit that is lacking on the part of the Arabs and worked to our advantage in both Gulf Wars: They are fighting for their very survival. Which the Iraqi conscript was not. Who is going to be the most ferocious in battle? The invaders? Or those with the blade (scimitar?) to their throats and their backs to the sea?

If you watch the video link on this story - one of the officers says that the feds were also invloved in the search. Not uncommon for someone that kills a police officer, just interesting with the name.

AP - British military jets scrambled to intercept passanger plane. No other info @ this time.
BOMB ALERT ON PLANE
Tornado jets have escorted a New York-bound Olympic Airlines passenger jet into Stansted Airport after a bomb alert.
A threat is reported to have been made to a Greek newspaper and the plane, which was flying from Athens, was diverted to Essex as it passed over France.
The pilot requested a military escort.
All 301 passengers have been escorted from flight 411.
A device has not yet been found.
A Stansted airport spokesman said the plane, bound for JFK airport, was diverted under "full emergency conditions".
"It does not get very much more serious than that," said Matthews.
"The pilot thought it was serious enough to call in an escort. This may be the first time this has happened in British airpspace. The alert is very much full scale.
"My understanding is that he would have said there was nothing less than there is a bomb on the plane."

This is by far the worst of the three storms to hit our area; we're getting winds of 50 mph, with gusts of 70. Very heavy rain. It's nonstop.
One of the feeder bands is coming in from the Gulf as I type. It's going to get worse. This is just tropical storm-force winds; I can't imagine what a hurricane-force winds would be like.
Not sure what I'm going to do about work. We start at 5 p.m., but the roads may still be too dangerous to travel.
Unless they check body cavities they may not find this bomb.
