Dan Rather vigorously defended his "60 Minutes" story on President Bush's National Guard service yesterday, saying the 30-year-old memos he disclosed on the show this week "were and remain authentic," despite questions raised by some handwriting and document experts.

I am not sure that is where the "mindset" source was. That source said that well, if that is what he wrote, that was must have been what was on his mind.

The Harris County post office discontinued operation in 1962....that would be the only post office in (todays) zip code area of 77034.
There is no United States Post Office in 77034 yet it is listed in that return address on the fake docs.
Then why was it
a mailing address of Ashland Chemical Company?
I think your assumption that there must be a post office for each Zip code is faulty.

If there really is "kerning" on the memos then that is the smoking gun. Typewriters back then did not have a memory of what was typed before, in order to kern. Those critters were damn stupid. I am a bit surprised that this has not got more play. It seems to be limited to the powerline blog. Somebody needs to get to the bottom of whether the type set on the memos was kerned.

AND DOWNLOADED...
Are they stupid enough to suggest that deterioration in quality occurs during downloading? How stupid to they think we are?
By the way, I went to cbsnews.com and watched the video of their defense, and one thing that stuck out was how they claimed that the "th" superscript was possible at that time and that other documents contemporary with the fake documents had "th" superscripts just like the ones in the fake documents. Then they showed zoomed in closeups, AND THEY WERE NOT ALIKE!!! One of them, the one that was not the fake, had an underline under the "th" and it also was not raised. IN FACT IT ABSOLUTELY WAS NOT A SUPERSCRIPT!!! It was down at the same level as the rest of the text! CBS is perpetrating a fraud even in their hapless attempts to defend themselves!

"were and remain authentic,"
Now that is a strange and Clintonian turn of phrase. Why doesn't he say "ARE authentic"? "were and remain"????!!!! Let's just say I've got more doubts about the meaning of "is" that I have certainty about the meaning of "were and remain", at least as it pertains to inanimate objects, like memos, written by a deceased man, 30 years ago.

I think that there is near conclusive proof. Every other network that had them analyzed by independent experts and they say almost certain the docs are forged.
To me that is good enough, coupled with the CBS lame defense and falling apart "sources" and "experts".
I understand that unless the person who forged them comes clean I doubt there will 100% "without a doubt" proof the docs are fake.
But that is a pretty tough level to reach, even in a criminal case the court does not put that kind of burden on the prosecution. It is only "beyond a reasonable doubt".
Whatever the case, CBS will keep sticking to their original 60 Minutes story due to their blind hate for Bush.

Did someone say that Dan Rather's daughter will never come clean?

Are there any docs the WH released (back in February, for example) with that address and Zip code for the base?
I think I understand you to say that there
can be addresses with that Zip code, but no PO Boxes since there's no Post Office.

You can tell by looking at the letter spacing that the memos IS kerned. Kerning determines the spacing of characters based on size and shape. The link I provided describes complicated algorithms required to accomplish kerning.

It would be nice if CBS has the cojones to admit that doubts exist. This claim of certainty on their part is simply ludicrous. The organization is dysfunctional.

Dan Rather will be forced to retire immediately.
Watch....SeeBS cannot retain any integrity until he's gone.
His words today are obvious that he's a legend in his own mind.
