It should be pointed out that Bush's lottery number was somewhere in the 300s, so NO WAY was he ever going to be called up.
How does a lottery number from 1972 make any difference to Bush's 1968 service? The lottery started in 1972, my senior year at Univ of Wisconsin.

I don't believe you are correct. When I turned 18 in 1971, I was issued a lottery number -- 180, as I recall.

The lottery began in 1969, it ended in 1972. Look here. The prime eligibility year was at age 19. I don't believe the lottery applied to Bush, who was born in 1946.

We had a thread on the draft a few days ago. It seems the lottery began in 1969. The first drawing covered birthdays from about 1945 to 1950. The 2nd drawing covered 1951 birthdays. The 3rd drawing covered 1952 birthdays, in which my number was 300 and something. The final year of the draft was 1973 I think.
