As others have noted, the use of the "spelled out date" of 18 August 1973 is "typical" of MS Word -

I just went back to my own discharge papers form the TXANG - 147th Fighter Group and confirmed that all dates are standard military usage and thus shoud read:= 18AUG73

Not to mention it is Military standard, at least army standard that you only print the first 3 letters of a month.
