Kerry is dead meat. They were too anxious to get back up in the polls. They were careless in unleashing this media blitz.

It's all over but the crying.

What is IAW etc and where is the followup?

IAW = "In accordance with."

AFM = Air Force Manual.

And though this explanation came from a left-wing kook website (they have articles on "right-wing bias in the media," chortle!), it is probably accurate nonetheless:

AFM 35-13 specifies that “When a Rated Officer Fails To Accomplish a Medical Examination Prescribed by AFM …(1) The local commander ... will direct an investigation ... (2) will forward the report along with the command recommendation to USAFMPC/DPMAJD, Randolph AFB TX 78148 for final determination.”

So, if Dubya really did miss his physical and this guy really busted out this memo, there really should be a letter from him to AF Manning telling them what he thinks should be done with Dubya. Anybody want to bet there won't be one? After all, sneaking into an Air Force Base and inserting a fake record in a file is a lot harder than "obtaining" some 1972 memos from Dan Rather's office printer.

Times New Roman was a standard font in 1969, and it was available in 10 and 12 with proportional spacing. We had 6 little balls for our Selectric. We had a cursive font, at least one Times New Roman fonts, a Courier font, a symbols font, and Greek letters.

"If Killian wrote 2-3 memos to file for Bush, he would certainly have written at least one other memo for some of the hundreds of other officers who served under him. Where are those memos?"

exactly . . .

The Selectric didn't have proportional spacing. It had selective spacing. At anyrate none of these typewriters could kern type. These memos are fake.

As did I, however, we also circumspectly added our initials to the signature. AA:AB/ca type info for tracking and authorization purposes.

In civilian world, titles are below the signature, I do not know how that appears in military terms, could someone clarify. Interesting that below the signatures here there are two distinct manners of identifying rank, one along typed name, the other below.

Dear TaxRelief,

"Times New Roman was a standard font in 1969,..."

I believe that Times Roman was a standard font in 1969, but I believe that Times NEW Roman is relatively new.

The link in #680 discusses this.

The "4" in the "Killian" documents is a Times NEW Roman font. Here is a link to a site with Times Roman characters:

http://www.typography-1st.com/typo/typeface.shtml

Look at the "4" in the character set. No "foot." Go look at the "Killian" docs.

Dr. Bouffard points this out at the link in #680.

I'm away from the computer where I have the documents downloaded, but I can tell you which ones to look at. The Westheimer address is in the 1972 and 1973 military payroll records that Bush released. Longmont is on most of the 1968 documents that the pentagon released.

What are the chances that an electronically spaced font like Times New Roman would give the exact same spacing?

You wouldn't get the exact spacing if unless the exact same typeface was used. Even TrueType and Adobe versions of a font often have subtle differences from each other.

I was gone for a little bit so excuse me if this has been solved.I ran down to the registrar of deeds office and looked up files from '72. I found examples of a clearly more modern looking type, very similar to the memo. the apostrophe's all were straight. I couldn't however find a secretary that used the raised "th". I don't know if that helps much but it seems closer.

>>That's exactly the same (allowing for pixellation by one faxing) spacing, kerning, character shapes, positioning of superscripts, line breaks, use/absence of hyphenation, absence of spelling errors, etc.

Oh, good, someone who has been doing this recently.

I worked in printing from 1975-1983, when it was mostly metal type for little jobs and photoset type for big jobs.

The metal type never lined up perfectly unless you used a big machine like a Linotype. My mother set type using Linotype.

Then she switched to the photo-machines, which used litho paper that had to be developed and then fixed, felt greasy, smelled bad, and had a tendency to fade if the fix solution wasn't replenished often enough.

I did pasteup and camera.

Glad I got out of that business, computers would have thrown me out eventually anyway.

These memos are definitely 12 point Times New Roman using standard Word leading and margins.

There is a reason that the apostrophes are straight. They had to serve as both left and right when making quotation marks.

You can't use curly apostrophes unless you have special ones for both left and right.

Thanks for posting that! I suggest everyone save it to your harddisks. It might come in handy. BTW, is there a page #1? I notice at the bottom it looks like these are numbered pages 2 & 3. I've never heard of a three-page DD214. Mine wasn't. But I'm just wondering. Thanks.

Kerning varies the type spacing depending on what letters are next to each other.

How about I ping half the world to this important development.

,,, well, here's the half that matters checking in.

I'm in a country where it's easier to enter Parliament than get a licence to drive a cab. This smoke and mirrors crisis is borrowing so heavily on sentiment and days gone by that it's distracting people from the fact that Kerry isn't up to the job he's pitching for. Until there's a comprehensive screening process established beyond criminal records checks for candidates from any party, the democratic process is going to be plastered with low grade street theatre just like this in run ups to elections. Voting on the basis of track records and issues at hand is the crux of keeping a nation together and on a forward path. It looks like the Florida finale last time has turned into this fiasco this time. Get a grip on the real issues, who's got the credibilty now and tick the right box on the day. If Americans are smart, December will have John Kerry asking "ya want sauce with those fries?"
