I am totally enraged by this article. It would be as if we were forced to engage in talks with Bin Laden or the Taliban. The state department should stfu. It's no wonder Russia is angry with the United States...Pres. Bush is wrong if he believes this-it is truly a double standard. The Russians would be fools to allow a Chechnayn Islamic state on their borderss-a perfect staging area for more terrorism against the Russian people.

I highly doubt that President Bush agrees with what the State Department did. Our great President is always saying and continues to say to this day that you cannot reason with or negotiate with these people. This smells like a Colin Powell deal to me. My guess is that Putin will receive a private phone call from the President telling him to go after them.

The Russians gave autonomous self rule to Chechnya from 1997 till 1999 and that is exactly what the Chechens did during that time. Kidnapping for ransom became the major Chechen industry and terrorists used Chechnya as a staging area for attacks on hospitals, police stations, apartment buildings, and buses in Russia, Dagestan, and North Osseta.
