Nothing (well almost nothing) would please me more than seeing Alan Keyes win a seat in the U.S. Senate!
Why?
And despite his remarks on reparations or affirmative action, I would be extremely happy and take great pleasure in seeing Alan Keyes defeat Barack Obama. I believe whole heartedly that unlike Obama, Senator Keyes would preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America to the utmost of his ability and would dedicate himself to working with all of us in securing the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, and if that makes me a selfish hedonist, then so be it.
I challenge anyone here to put up a detailed list of the reasons why you believe Barack Obama would be better for America in the Senate than Alan Keyes.
Exactly.
I've never seen them criticize Arlen Specter with the same level of venom.
Wouldn't the only way to do that be strictly avoiding talking about things that certain people find unlikeable? I'm not sure that's realistic.
I believe he prides himself in his belittling and condescension.
This is probably the argument from the anti-Keyes side I understand the least. I don't see Keyes as being condescending--I see him as being unswerving in stating what he believes, especially on moral issues. I think people who get defensive about this are probably allowing their emotions (pride, guilt, resentment, envy, whatnot) to get in the way of objectively reading/hearing what he has to say.
I disagree with Keyes on a variety of issues, but he is preferable to a stone socialist such as Obama.
You go pikeman, haven't jousted with/alongside you in a while!
It's amazing being in this media/Keyes hurricane, though. Keyes is like {Nixon + Tailgunner Joe} to these guys. Protecting communists again, it seems.
As many great conservative positions Keyes might take, he is still a terrible politician who simply doesn't win elections.
Would that be bracingly conservative? ;^)
A principled, erudite, and articulate man such as the Keyesmeister will be pretty much as startling as a sasquatch sighting to the typical journalist/media type.
It is an odd place we find ourselves in when we probably agree 99.9% on issues of morality and absolutes.
I agree with you, Outlaw, that we should not be scared into submission by the politically correct of the secular world. I also believe that we need to keep these issues out in front in a hope that productive debates will occur and hopefully hearts can be changed.
I suppose therein lies my problem with Keyes. He has an attitude that tends to make things ugly and I don't think that accomplishes much and, in fact, shoves our "cause" into a bad light.
I used to be a great admirer of the man. He said so many things that I wanted to hear. But it seems about at the point he entered the 2000 primary, he turned up his bitter approach and took on a holier-than-thou posture. Somehwere in the middle of all of it I realized that, for me, this man may have many good messages, but could not deliver them in a way that reaches beyond those that already share his beliefs.
As time went on I became more and more repulsed by his manner and it didn't help that he surrounded himself with a person or two whose character was the antithesis of what he tried to represent. A deep distrust began to build.
As for his condescension, I think he drips with pompousness and is more interested in coming off as Mr. Authority than actually extending his ideas to those who need to be convinced. I suppose those that still favor him do not feel talked down to, but then again, are his fans the ones who need to be persuaded?
I've tried to think of an analogy and it is difficult. The best I can come up with is an overbearing parent who never stops to remember what he/she was like as a child or teen and thus never discovers a productive way to communicate with his/her children. Rather he/she only chastises and ridicules and preaches about right and wrong to ears that have already rejected the message because the messenger has failed to recall what things look like through a child's eyes.
I truly believe that Keyes has created a career for himself by being the bombastic voice of frustrated people who so want to hear about right and wrong that they forget that the methods are just as important as the words. He feeds that craving and literally depends on that audience to survive. But how many has he reached outside that circle? That is, after all, what he should strive to do. This is where I believe he has failed miserably. I am not so sure that is even his goal. If he doesn't have his faithful who get excited when he starts an uproar, he has little. They keep the checks coming in.
I don't see that the philosophy is that much different than some of these cult leaders who prey upon certain personalities that are prone to follow.
I don't mean for this to offend anyone who likes Keyes. I am simply trying to explain it as I see it since the two of you seemed to want to understand.
somehwere = somewhere
LOL
Surprise surprise! (Best Gomer Pyle voice)
We all know where you stand (sit) there T...
Do you agree that a humble man would realize he is drowning his own messaage too often when he steps over the line?
Wouldn't that same humble man temper his words and try harder to succeed in making people think, rather than making many angry or sympathetic toward his object of criticism?
Wrong again. He's actually for repealing and replacing the income tax. I'm not sure anyone can make that tax code less equitable than it already is.
He's tax moratorium for blacks would be permanent with the repeal of the IRS. Take off the blinders.
He makes me think all the time. So it is a bit hard to relate, I guess.
messaage = message
Note to self: Click on spellcheck.
Perhaps, I have simply not watched Keyes enough, mostly just having read transcripts and speeches. Next time I'll look for the foaming at the mouth.
But you are already in his camp. Do you think those that aren't there are drawn to him with his ranting?
Better......If you want him to be elected, might some humility attract people more than he does now?
Please articulate the deep end, since apparently he has gone off it and lost your vote. Read again the list of reasons that Jim gives for supporting him. Remember also that this site was originally dedicated in part to the restoration of the Constitution and that Keyes is clearly a man dedicated to that task.
Keye's poll numbers suggest your judgment is right on.
He take the most just cause, and with his combative personality, condescending self-rigteousness and holier than thou attitude..make you SORRY he's on your side.
Hey, let us all know when the GOP invites you to run for anything...
If you were only a tenth as clever as you think you are, you would have come up with something better than that.
