From recycling much of his recall-election stump speech of a year ago to calling critics of the economy "girlie men" to asserting that "we're back" from the attack on the American way of life, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger lit up the Republican convention with his freewheeling star power Tuesday.
Delegates could hardly have been more thrilled by the prime-time show.
"This puts him over the top as a national political figure, not just an action figure," said delegate and Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle.
But the task for Schwarzenegger extended far beyond the faithful gathered at Madison Square Garden. Many expected the actor-politician to attract more television viewers than any speaker other than the president. He topped a lineup of speakers designed to attract those who might not share George W. Bush's positions against abortion, against expanded funding of stem-cell research and against further gun control.
Because he showed in running for California governor that he had mass appeal, Republicans also hope that he can motivate people to the polls who might not otherwise turn out. Part of that could come from those inspired by his rags-to-riches immigrant story particularly immigrants themselves, who have traditionally gravitated toward Democratic candidates.
"To my fellow immigrants listening tonight, I want you to know how welcome you are in this party," he said after recounting his immigrant experience, similar to that part of the speech he gave while campaigning last year. "We Republicans admire your ambition. We encourage your dreams. We believe in your future."

Yeah, I heard something like that. Strange days indeed.
Agreed. I have to say, I never was much on long political speeches, but Giuliani & Arnold were outstanding! Gives you another reason to be happy to be on the winning side!
I didn't get to see and hear Rudy's speech. I read it hear on FR, and it was a stirring speech. Ron Silver's speech was the icing on the top of Rudy's great speech.
Some of our relatives in the MW and SW had never heard Arnold give a speech until last night. They were blown away, and they now understand why we voted for him to oust Davis.
ROFL
I will make this prediction. Arnold has roughly 3 years left to go as governor...and my bet is that GW appoints to ambassador to Germany once is he wrapped up there in California. And GW's message to Arnold...go and talk as much as you want...everyday...in Germany...and let people hear your inspiration. The German media hates Arnie...and won't even take him serious. But he could change 30 percent of the German vote around in 3 years, and bring down the liberal causes in Germany for at least 10 years.
He can win re-election, and then it's Senator Schwarzenegger, I think.
Under pressure from his Hollywood friends, he has ENDORSED California Prop 71, which sticks the taxpayer with a bond issue to fund embryonic stem cell research. He is PRO-Abortion, and now PRO-embryonic stem cell research.
AND, he wants to legally indebt Californians for $3 Billion to fund it!
again I predicted this last year...
Vote 4 McClintock or Pay$ the Con$equence$
You can't be a fiscal conservative as RINOld claimed and a social liberal at the same time...ya gotta pay for those programs somehow!
Now he's proposing embryonic stem cell research which has been documented TO HAVE NO MEDICAL RESEARCH BENEFIT!
While adult stem cell research has!!!
Bonds, loans and the largest budget in CA history spells DISASTER! All he's doing is moving the proverbial deck chairs on the Titanic! And with Pete Wilson on his staff why should anyone be surprised. Let me remind everyone that Wilson nearly ran the CA economy into the toilet when he was governor!!!
Wait 'til all these starry eyed RINOld fans get their state income tax bills next year!
No RINOld should stay in CA and clean up this mess we have here!!!
He wanted the job and the majority of Californians elected him to fix the mess; he needs to DO THE FRIGGIN' JOB HE WAS ELECTED TO DO!!
If W needs some "cheerleaders" let him find them somewhere else, thank you!!! There are plenty of Republicans who are not up for reelection or who are not in office like Rudy who can campaign for W.
We are in a terrible financial mess out here and RINOld needs to do what he was elected to do! PERIOD!
I thought Arnold said he would not run for a second term?
and I am talking about 40 BILLION DOLLARS OF DEBT,
chill out?
you may be able to "afford" to "chill out" where you live but we cannot!!!
go get your governor to campaign for W!
and quit recruiting ours!!!
oh that's right you can't! LMAO
You sound stressed. Democrats caused California's problems, and campaigning for Republicans is part of the cure.
RINOld has "said" a lot of things...
You don't think much of Rinold do you?
If Ahnold wishes to bring down the debt in CA, perhaps the best thing he could do is stay out of Sacramento --and encourage all the legislators to do the same.
"You don't think much of Rinold do you?"
and why should I?
he's an opportunist who jumped on the recall wagon and rode the parade into Sacramento...
He's pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-homosexual, pro-embryonic stem cell research, pro state sponsered government programs, tax and spend liberal who has given us the largest budget in CA history and a 40 BILLION DOLLAR DEBT!!!
What's to like? ROFLMAO
