My family is attending a wedding in Miami this weekend. My wife and kids just arrived there and I am scheduled to fly out tomorrow evening. Can't help thinking that maybe it was irresponsible of me to let my wife and kids go. We are staying at a hotel in Miami and we were supposed to go on a 3 day cruise right after the wedding in Nassau. Does anyone have any advice for us if the hurricane does hit Miaimi? Since my family is there already, I will make every effort to go there and be with them if things do get bad. Like I said, I'm feeling guilty about letting them go and want to be with them if this thing hits. Any advice on how to deal with a hurricane when you are staying at a hotel.

...right after the wedding in Nassau

Nassau? You may want to check on that as Frances is currently on track to go right over the Bahamas.

If you're staying at a hotel that's not on the beach, you should be okay. Being several floors up is preferable because it minimizes the risk of debris flying into your window.

Plan on losing power, so take a portable radio. Bottled water might be a good idea, too. Taping the windows is useless.

Are you sure the wedding isn't being postponed?

Free advice:

1) Miami is a potentially rough town, like New Orleans.

2) Keep the Spouse & Kids in Miami, just make sure you're with them. It could get dicey.

3) Motel Safety ? Stay in a room that isn't on the top floor. Second floors are best, if there's one above you. Beware of flying glass.

We were in Homestead during Hurricane Andrew and we are scheduled to fly into Ft Lauderdale Sat afternoon for a week in Mia and the Keys. I don't think it is going to be that bad in Miami. The problem you are going to have is getting an airline t o fly you into there tomorrow. You may have to switch to a Sunday flight. Worst case scenario, you will miss the wedding but make the cruise unless the Bahamas get wrecked. You should be able to get there early Sunday. Or.... if you want to play it really safe, you can fly them back tomorrow or Friday.
