Anyone with any kind of knowledge will tell you that a slow moving hurricane can result in the most deaths and damage in the immediate impact zone of the eye wall. We are talking about 24 hours in land...that is over 15 hrs of Hurricane force winds..then another 4-6 in tropical storm force in the path.

**but she is dependent on electricity for some of her health needs (nebulizer, etc.) **

For emergencies, consider getting her a battery powered nebulizer. I use one.

Prayer heavenward for your MIL *and* your family. <><

Nasa closing

Nasa will close at 5pm tonight (9/01) and will not leave a team behind to ride out the storm. Hubby said that they are buttoning down and leaving.

Thanks for the info. I was asking her today if her nebulizer could also run on batteries. I was pretty sure they must have one. She also uses a concentrator for oxygen, but has a small tank for temporary emergencies.

Without electricity the elderly really suffer because of the heat too.

We're very satisfied with the place she was evacuated to during Charley. It was a lovely complex in Sarasota, and she thought the food was better there than at her residence's dining room. Because of that, I think she's looking forward to possibly having to go down there again, LOL!

I bought my nebulizer on ebay for $50, so the expense isn't too bad.

I've cut and pasted some info from this thread and will be calling my dad again this afternoon. He cares for his wife (alzheimers) and during Charley she was having a very hard time. A neighbor let him use his generator so the contents of dad's freezer wouldn't go bad. Still alot of trees down in his area too.

Where area are you in, dawn?

Ok, I'm an amateur (and not a very good one) but that loop tells me that this thing has not much of a chance of bypassing FL and going up the coast.

Very good observation by an amateur ;)

OK, I noticed that those loops are .jpgs so I'm going to try to paste one of them in here.

That's a good plan, since those schools may be eventually used for shelters, if they withstand all this.

Thanks! I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. And probably tomorrow night, and the next night, and the next, and the next ... :-)

Are models starting to show a little further north hit than Melbourne?

I suspect that Brevard Country Emergency Management got the head's up from the NHC. I could be wrong, but to me this is as good an indicator as any that a solid consensus has formed within the forecasting community that Frances is headed for the Treasure Coast.

I'm going outside to position my plywood, just the same.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

Not really (sorry if that is bad news)....the models were showing a more northerly course yesterday than today.

A direct hit could still be anywhere from Palm Beach to Daytona.

As big as this thing is, if it hits Broward, Miami will be getting a ton of it. (It's less than a 1 hour drive from Homestead to Coral Springs in Broward). Might want to consider going into Largo if it hits Broward and you're determined to head South.

So, the eye is 30 miles wide, then the hurricane force winds extend 80 miles outside that, and then the TS winds extend 180 miles outside of that, is that right?

LOL, right! But he's not married to Donna Hicken now is he? And has she been married that many times?
