..........McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, was among the first to condemn the veterans group for challenging Kerry's combat record and spoke out against the ad throughout his 90-minute luncheon interview. But he also said Kerry had invited scrutiny of his record by putting so much emphasis on Vietnam at the Democratic National Convention in Boston last month.
"His critics are saying, 'Look, you made it fair game,' " McCain said. "I mean, that's very legitimate, and I think there's a risk that he took when he made it such a centerpiece. He may be paying a very heavy price."
McCain said that he urged Kerry sometime ago not to talk about Vietnam during his campaign. "I did advise John. I said, 'Look, you shouldn't talk about Vietnam because everybody else will. Let everybody else do it.' His advisers figured that was probably not enough, that he had to emphasize that in his campaign. In my campaign, as you know, I didn't talk about it because I didn't need to."
McCain also said he drew a distinction between the first anti-Kerry ad by the veterans group, which focused on Kerry's Vietnam service, and a second ad now airing that criticizes Kerry for his leadership in the antiwar movement after he returned from Vietnam. McCain condemned the first ad but not the second.
................He said neither Kerry nor Bush should have their service records challenged. ...........
Asked whether he is equally passionate in wanting to put Kerry's antiwar activities off-limits, he said, "I think his activities after the war open, and are subject to, any debate and discussion that they want to, .................. Everybody is accountable for what they do, and certainly John Kerry is accountable for what he did after the war, and people can make a judgment." .......

I cut parts of ..."Speaking with emotion" and that he's concerned about "ripping up all the old wounds."
OK.. so McCain is coming back to our side AGAIN?? He flips and flops more than Kerry.
It's just so wonderful to see a "Republican" (sic) coaching a Democrat on how to wage a successful campaign against a Republican incumbent. NOT.
McCain is a Republican because there was an opportunity in Arizona. If he had run in California, he would have run as a democrat.
Is McCain joining Bush, or is Bush joining McCain?
He needs to retire. Those growths on the side of his face are getting gross.
Why is McCainiac advising the enemy?
He and O'Butthead should get a room.
Still, it is interesting how bullheaded Kerry is about this Vietnam thing. Even McCainiac warned him to stifle it...
I bet if Kerry were just some poor Boston working schmoe, and not a rich senator, he'd still be bragging about his Vietnam exploits 24/7 - only it'd be from a bar stool...
And O'Rielly is a pompous cretin.
I think McCain is joining Bush.
I think McCain's ears have been burning and his mail box is full.
I think Bush gave McCain a graceful way out (which again makes Bush the leader) and w/o stopping the ads. Nothing can stop the cycle this year.
It's the "senate buddy" thing.
Kay Bailey Hutchinson refused to campaign against fellow women senate members.
They're above all that, don't you know.
McCain still hates him...
yes McCain is loose and a bit self inflated.
O'Reilly has forgotten who brought him to the dance. I'd like to see his ratings in the future.
This has cut the chafe from the wheat....
>>Those growths on the side of his face are getting gross.<<
He has melanoma. When you have melanoma, you know what you are going to die from. It's just a question of when.
I wouldn't wish that upon even a clymer like McCain.
Before we got FNC added to our cable(after begging and pleading with them for years!),I put on O'Reilly, after hearing him praise so highly here, and thought to myself...WHAT THE...?????????? And that was a few years ago.I have NEVER thought him to be any good at all and now he's worse.
oh yes I know.
My dad was friendly with Sonny Montgomery and Jamie Whitten (both Miss) and they all crowed that Kennedy was everyone's favorite senator on the Hill.
meanwhile, they all believed Mary Jo drowned cause she was expecting.
an odd bunch...good thing so few of them do make POTUS..lol
Some more info on McCain's melanoma. I have had assorted basil cells removed from my forehead so I take an interest in his recovery.

He was highly critical of Gore's selected recount...I think that helped him.
that and he is old fashioned about some but not all things.
however, he has jumped the shark and forsaken his audience...pretty dumb for a rabid pundit.
