527s and big money politics

The McCain-Feingold campaign finance law was supposed to get rid of big money in politics. Much of the soft-money that used to go to political parties prior to the law now goes to 527 organizations. Opensecrets.org publishes on the Internet financial information about the groups. The most recent (8/15/04) information released by the IRS shows that only one of the top 22 individual donors gave to conservative leaning groups.

If you look at the top 20 donors, including unions and others, no conservative makes the list.

For an idea of the size of these donations: The Service Employees International Union topped the list, giving more than $20,000,000. The top individual donor was Peter Lewis of Progressive Corporation, who gave more than $14,000,000.
