This does not bode well for the East Coast. With Charley increasing in intensity and turning more eastward it could well move up over the ocean rather than inland. The Gulf Stream sometimes keeps hurricanes close to the coast, not allowing them to go out to sea. This could cause it to stregthen even more.
Some here in the Hampton Roads area are still cleaning up from a brush with a much weakened Hurricane Isabel last year.

(new track is to East, Lakeland - Orlando in path)
If it goes ashore at Charlotte Harbor, it'll be but a tropical storm by the time it gets to Lakeland/Orlando.

Sort of like watching a train wreck about to happen in slow-motion, and no one's quite sure where it's going to crash.
Only thing for sure is, you know it's going to hit something somewhere.

It will be very interesting to see what the stock of the Walt Disney Company (DISN) is right now. Walt Disney World is a MAJOR moneymaker for the company and if the hurrican hits anywhere near full force it could cause tremendous damage to the resort, which could result in huge losses in revenue to the company. :-(

Stay safe everyone. This looks pretty bad. I've only been through a Cat 1 (Hurricane Gloria) and that was bad enough. We were without power for a week and we had to cut our way through all the fallen trees to get out of our driveway.

Could this thing gather up enough steam and easterly flow to get across the state and into the Atlantic intact and then proceed up the coast? Or are they still counting on it taking an overland track north?

Who says Charley don't surf?
Kerry sez - "If I were President, I would know how to handle Charley better. When I was in Vietnam I faced Charley every day in a life and death struggle. My swift boat alone held Charley at bay and bringing me home was President Reagan's worst mistake of the war. I have a secret plan for turning back Charley and if I'm elected...
Aide - "Uh, Senator, "Charley" is a hurricane."
Kerry - "Oooookay... Did I mention my secret mission to infiltrate General Giap's bedroom? I took my swift boat deep into North Vietnam under cover of darkness and, disguised in my lucky straw hat I got from a VC double agent, checked into the Hanoi Hilton....

It might be of interest that in August, 1951, a category four hurricane called Charlie, which also developed early in the hurricane season, killed more than 100 people in Jamaica.

My wife and I are scheduled to fly down from Ohio to Ft. Myers next Saturday. A close college friend of hers is seriously ill with cancer, and we are going to spend some time with them. My wife spoke with them Wednesday night, and they were well-stocked with supplies and ready to ride things out. Hope they don't lose power for too long.

Another point...it is said that there are no atheists in foxholes, and, at the moment, Fort Myers is one big foxhole. If so inclined, take a moment to pray for the folks in the direct path of this storm.
