Apocalypse Now was never intended to be a realistic portrayal of Vietnam. It was a 1970s-vintage spin-off of the Joseph Conrad novel Heart of Darkness, set in Vietnam instead of on the Congo River in Africa.
If you read Conrad's novel, you'll understand why an "accurate" portrayal of the Vietnam War would have made the movie utterly meaningless.

Conrad was most profoundly influenced by Schopenhauer's, some would say nihilistic but what most describe as pessimistic, philosophy.
Wagner was once a great friend of Nietzsche (like Schopenhauer with Goethe) who would later consider Wagner no longer worthy of his respect. His music contrary to what Kerry has sad is appropriate and also appropriate to have used during the DNC convention ??????

When I first read and each time I have reread it (over a dozen times), I had and still have the same feeling that you posted:
