I am a Keyes admirer who voted for him twice. I agree with about 99 percent of Alan's views.
As a federalist, I deplore the state-shopping that has become so prevalent in Senate races. If we're just going to import candidates from out of state, why bother representing states at all?
However, the writer is correct. Keyes represents a tradition that is no longer welcome in the "Big Tent" Republican Party: limited government, constitutionalist conservatism. Remember that the RNC chairman told the Manchester Union Leader that limited-government views are no longer welcome in the GOP.
How the Republican Party handles the Keyes candidacy will show what the party's true values are. It will show whether the Republican Party still has any of its principles left or whether it has completely become a Big Government party.
My guess is that they turn their backs on Keyes and do less than nothing to get him elected.
To adhere with federal law, Keyes merely has to move to Illinois before the Nov. 2 election. But the political restrictions could be more severe than the legal ones. On Friday, both major Chicago newspapers already were jabbing at Keyes as a "carpetbagger" who knows nothing about the state or its moderate politics.
"Mr. Keyes may have noticed a large body of water as he flew into O'Hare. This is called Lake Michigan," the Chicago Tribune wrote in an editorial "welcoming" the candidate from "the right wing of the right wing of the Republican Party."
"... Camden Yards may be the future of ballparks, but don't go asking around Wrigley Field for sushi," the paper warned him.
What's going to be fun is watching those papers try to play "Gotcha" with Keyes and being humiliated when he demonstrates that he can answer Illinois-specific questions. Even his Bashers admit he's a brilliant man...how long does it take for someone of reasonably gifted intellect to be schooled on the major issues facing the state of Illinois (not to mention it's regional proclivities)? Keys is smart enough to know there will be tons of gotcha questions, and smart enough to learn the answers. And every time he answers one right he increases his credibility as an Illinois-worthy candidate in the eyes of the voters.
well that is what he excels at. But good luck to him but, If Illinois is about to elect Kerry in a landslide I have to wonder why he feels he is going to win there.
I wish I could say Keyes had a chance here in the Peoples Republik of Illinois but this state is so RAT controlled and has become so liberal, I don't think Keyes can even come close to a win.

To bad this did'nt work out. It would be a good pairing. Never say Never!
Keyes will certainly be an interesting candidate, and certainly a more viable one than Mike Ditka, but I just can't see how they're going to get around the fact that he is a resident of Maryland. I look forward to hearing how this plays out.
To quote Jim Robinson,
"Go Keyes Go!!"
:-)
Neither Party is monolithic in its ideology!
Good......chuck the RINOs into the fissure.
Illinois woud be served well by such a brilliant man.
I can only hope that it comes to pass.
At least, the Party has diverse opinions and can be divided!!
What a contrast to the other Party which has squelched the voices of all but the most Radical Left and organized its entire effort around the PHILOSOPHY OF HATE for the current President!
As I've said on another thread on this subject:
All Free Republic lovers of liberty should be thrilled when an articulate person steeped in an understanding of America's Constitutional republic and the philosophy expressed in the Declaration of Independence gets a chance to be heard by hundreds of thousands of people.
Let's not quibble about the win/lose question right now. Hadn't the election already been virtually conceded to Obama when Ryan dropped out? If so, let's just be glad that a controversial, outspoken advocate for liberty has a chance to be heard. Who knows, some future young leader may be influenced by the reasoned arguments Keyes will use to rebut the Liberal Left politics of the Democrats.
Every voice for the Founders' philosophy is needed right now. Keyes, by education and by talent and devotion to the Constitution, needs to be heard. Let him have the pulpit! Give him the vote. Fresh air and sunshine are needed--and the young rising star of the Liberal Left may learn some new debating skills, and a thing or two about America's founding philosophy too."
If Divine Providence did, indeed, as Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and the other brave signers of the Declaration of Independence believed, have a hand in the formation of this great experiment in liberty, then perhaps there is a reason for one of its great defenders to have a chance, in 2004, to articulate the ideas of liberty today in a setting so controversial that it will draw attention!
"Public opinion sets bounds to every government, and is the real sovereign in every free one," wrote James Madison, the 'Father' of our Constitution.
"The foundation of every government is some principle or passion in the minds of the people," said John Adams in 1776."
Clearly, their great and consuming principle and passion was LIBERTY! THAT IS WHAT WE'RE ABOUT TO LOSE IF THE FAR LEFT PREVAILS IN THE 'PUBLIC SQUARE' TODAY.
Let Alan Keyes enlighten a few (or many) minds--win or lose. A win would result in a great voice for liberty in the U. S. Senate. A loss is what will happen anyway. But, along the way, some common sense will enter the debate with Obama!
That we're "hearing things about his finances" should be put into perspective--especially by any in Illinois (The Land of Lincoln). Here's Lincoln's record:
Here is a sketch of Lincolns road to the White House:
1816 His family was forced out of their home.
1818 His mother died.
1831 Failed in business.
1832 Ran for state legislature - lost
1832 Lost his job - wanted to go to law school but couldnt get in.
1833 Borrowed some money from a friend to begin a business and by the end of the year he was bankrupt. He spent the next 17 years of his life paying off this debt.
1834 Ran for state legislature again - won.
1835 Was engaged to be married, sweetheart died and his heart was broken.
1836 Had a nervous breakdown and was in bed for six months.
1838 Sought to become speaker of the state legislature - defeated
1840 Sought to become elector - defeated
1843 Ran for Congress - lost
1846 Ran for Congress again - this time he won - went to Washington and did a good job.
1848 Ran for re-election to Congress - lost
1849 Sought the job of land officer in his home state - rejected
1854 Ran for Senate of the United States - lost
1856 Sought the Vice-Presidential nomination at his partys national convention - got less than 100 votes.
1858 Ran for U.S. Senate again - again he lost
1860 Elected president of the United States
The path was worn and slippery. My foot slipped from under me, knocking the other out of the way, but I recovered and said to myself, "Its a slip and not a fall."
- Abraham Lincoln after losing a senate race.
How do reporters count cadence?
Moderate, Moderate, Moderate Right Moderate.
Moderate, Moderate, Moderate Right Moderate.
Eenie Meenie Miney Moe. Let me hear that moderate foot go!.
A victory is not going to happen, but forcing the electorate to see that Black America is not a leftist monolith. Dr. Keyes is brilliant, articulate and right. I pray that he doesn't get in even deeeper debt over this. We owe him huge!
It seems someone is afraid of Keyes entering the race...
Let the people Vote
and We'll Decide
The media is getting spoiled and thinks
they can hand-pick our candidates on the left
and the right.
Go for it, Keyes!!
Let those Democrats squirm!!!
The left is getting desperate!
