Letter writer off base about Islamic group Saturday, August 07, 2004
I address Bob Harts comments and accusations about an organization I represent ("Enough about Abu Ghraib, radical group," letter, last Saturday).
I am privileged to serve the Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. CAIR is a nonprofit, grass-roots civil-rights and advocacy organization dedicated to helping the American community better understand Islam and Muslims. CAIR, based in Washington, has 28 regional offices and chapters in the United States and Canada.
In October 2003, the American Civil Liberties Union-Ohio presented CAIR-Ohio with its prestigious Libertys Flame Award for CAIROhios "actions and courage defending the civil liberties of Muslims, immigrants and of all Americans in a time of national crisis."
CAIR-Ohio has received certificates of recognition for its work in the community from two members of Columbus City Council. Officials who have spoken at CAIR-Ohio events include members of Congress, members of the Ohio House and Senate, Franklin County officials, Columbus City Council members, clergy and national and local interfaith leaders.
Community leaders and people who know us appreciate that our work defending civil liberties and educating the community reflects our commitment to help make America a better place for all people.
Muslims in America today are facing challenges similar to other groups who have faced prejudice and discrimination. Those who do not know us become susceptible to rumor and negative stereotypes about "those people." As Americas largest Islamic civil-liberties group, CAIR has been the subject of defamation campaigns.
Contrary to a statement in Harts letter, CAIRs national leaders have never been charged with ties to terrorist organizations. CAIR has consistently condemned terrorism, from statements released the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, to the recent "Not in the Name of Islam" online petition drive on our Web site.
Hart said he is about two beheadings past believing Islam is a religion of peace. His views are similar to those Iraqis who would claim they are about two abused prisoners past believing Americans want to liberate them and not dominate them. Both refuse to recognize the vast numbers of people of conscience on the other side who have been horrified by the atrocities associated with their nation or their faith.
CAIR-Ohios work reflects its belief that when any person suffers injustice, we are all diminished as human beings. The Red Cross found that 70 percent to 90 percent of Iraqi detainees were arrested by mistake. The revolting abuse and the prisoner deaths being investigated as homicides at Abu Ghraib are examples of injustice. So are the barbaric beheadings, which have been condemned by us and by Muslims all over the world, including scholars at Al-Azhar, which is Sunni Islams highest authority.
CAIR-Ohio will continue to work for peace, justice and understanding in our community and our nation. The misinformation contained in letters such as Harts reminds us of how much work needs to be done.
We invite anyone who is interested in learning more about CAIROhio to visit us during our monthly open house. Please call 614-451-3232 for more information.

Ping! (Tony, could you please ping your central Ohio list?)
And we tend to sleep with them in the name of "tolerance".
Not so much the events on 9-11, but the silence of so-called moderate Muslims has helped Americans understand Islam very well, thank you!
Yeah Islam is a religion of peace, which is why a Islamic Somali extremist nutcase was going to blow up the Polaris mall just north of Columbus last fall...
What a moron......
Evil takes care and rewards its own liberalsly.
Have you ever talked with someone who USED to be a muslim?
"CAIR is a nonprofit, grass-roots civil-rights and advocacy organization dedicated to helping the American community better understand Islam and Muslims. "
Fortunately, the American community is learning all by themselves the vile despicable truth about the maniacs of Islam.
LOL! We do not wish to understand more about your death cult and its zombie followers, we know enough already.
Saw ut first here, and I don't know who to give the credit to, but this is THE best line to use in response to anyone defending Islam...
" Everything I need to know about Islam I learned on 9-11."
" Everything I need to know about Islam I learned on 9-11."
I don't know the author, but they are right on!
That is good. Somebody here uses a tagline "Moderate Islam is for dilettantes." I like that one too.
Us good guys can use "Everything I need to know about Islam I learned on 9-11" to make the point with most people and then when some gay ass, nuanced type thinks that's too simplistic we can hit em with "Moderate Islam is for dilettantes."
Thanks for the info and ping.

It's always a sign of being a brain dead clone when you use the word "community" 5 times.
