We'll punish Bushes at the polls, immigrants promise
Immigrant voters will show their displeasure with the Bush brothers for not doing enough to help undocumented migrants become legal, advocates say.
Leaders of several immigrant and labor rights organizations in South Florida on Thursday accused President Bush and his brother, Gov. Jeb Bush, of failing to keep promises to help undocumented migrants legalize their presence.
At a Miami news conference, speakers for the groups said immigrants who have become American citizens will vote against candidates who have not helped advance proposals that would enable illegal migrants to achieve legal status. The proposals are two congressional bills that would put migrant farmworkers and children of undocumented migrants on a track to legal residency and a plan to grant temporary residency to undocumented migrants from Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
''Immigrants are paying attention and, come Election Day, they will cast their ballots for public officials who deliver on their promises, not for those who continue to make empty promises,'' said Eliseo Medina, executive vice president of Service Employees International Union.
Taylor Gross, a White House spokesman, said President Bush is working with Congress in shaping his guest-worker program. Jacob DiPietre, a Gov. Bush spokesman, said his boss was studying the proposal.
Activists at the news conference said President Bush had offered to grant temporary work permits to illegal migrant workers but had done little to advance the project, and had also not objected to Republican lawmakers in Congress blocking a separate bill giving residency to migrant farmworkers.
They also took Gov. Bush to task for not following up on his recent statement that he would be ''inclined'' to support temporary protected status for Haitians. Immigrant advocates said the offer should also be extended to Dominicans.
DiPietre said Gov. Bush realizes only the federal government can grant temporary status.
..."Let me see if I have this straight: people who came here legally are going to vote against Bush because he won't help the people who broke the law to get here?"
I'd bet that most of these people didn't get here legally, and are part of the group of illegals that Clin'toon legalized.
Most of the people that come here legally, following the rules, are against illegal immigration. But that's only because they are here to make something of themselves, and see the illegals crossing now with no intention of doing anything but holding out a hand and spreading their collective legs.
I agree with with you. The sad thing is that most of the steps you propose taking are popular with most Americans and could be implemented if politicians were tough enough to weather the inevitable but bogus charges of racism and xenophobia that would be heaped upon them by the Dem party, ethnic interests groups, Mexican govt, mainstream media, and the WSJournal wing of the GOP. Ultimately, most voters would reward them.
But time is running out. There may very well come a time when the majority no longer favors such common sense immigration reform. There may come a time when most support the type of reform endorsed by the Left and GOP leadership -- amnesty for illegals and massively increasing already mass levels of legal immigration.
But if we took these steps then many illegals would self-deport back to their home, and some of the magnet for legal immigrants would be lessened.
But so long as we continue to have mass immigration, even if it is all legal, then the resulting demographic shift will continue to favor the Dems.

Well were it up to me we would just dance to the beat of our own drum. You are right though and that is due to the economics of decefits and supporting a large govt.
Soon anglo saxon types will be in the minority and guess what? Suddenly we won't label anybody as an ethnic minority. That will be old hat, yesterday's news, and reeking of racism. We'll have moved on to a utopia where Spanish will be the language of choice. Well, immigrants are what make this country great. No doubt about it.
I worry that too many with an alien language and culture and mores are here already with more arriving everyday. We can't possibly assimilate them all. Their ways aren't our ways. They come from a culture where corruption is endemic and the protestant work ethic is virtually unknown. And yes, there are many who will work their hearts out and want to become Americans in every way, and God bless them. But there are too many who dream of Azatlan, ethnic cleansing, etc., and want to rip off this country. Why should they bother to obey our laws when we behave like fools? Free this and that, next they'll be voting, etc.. It's no wonder the rest of the world thinks we're stupid. They wouldn't allow mass migration into France or Germany, not for one minute.
In other words affirmative action Republican style....
I worked as a poll worker at a polling place (school) that is at least 98 percent Latino AND at least 75% "English language learners" at the 4-6th grade levels. You must be registered to vote, no matter that we have those GAWD-awful signs saying you need not prove who you might be.
I DID have problems, however, with the "outreach" effort for volunteer poll workers that would go to such an extent that they would enlist "bilinguals" that couldn't speak English.
I only signed up in the first place BECAUSE the previous time I voted at that location, the polls opened 45 minutes late. AND reading about Mexico's elections, it appears that is a prime ploy to keep citizens from voting.
Maybe I'm lucky by circumstance or maybe I'm just friggin' crazy (I KNOW I'm subborn) , but I woulda sat there all damn day till the ding dong polls opened!!
As regards Juarez, it appears that's the ditch ground for young Mexican women, si? I want to see at least ONE article in the Left Angeles Times about what Señor Fox's RESPONSIBILITY might be beyond his banda dance around the E.U. Haven't heard or read much about him lately. Maybe he took back to his "sick bed' like he did on the WOT effort.
So these wholesome, hard working immigrants who have become American citizens and attained the right to vote legally, plan to use that voting right to punish the Bush brothers, because they aren't aiding and abetting criminals who have entered this country in violation of our immigration laws.
Sounds like we were a little too hasty in granting their citizenship, doesn't it?
Even the Asians are hiring the illegal drag-a$$es. Have you been to your local "Chinese" quick-stop take-out place yet and said "Yo quiero Kung Pao Pollo?"
And they're all collecting sales tax and you will NEVER see a receipt unless requested.
Just to be on the "FAIR' side ... if that was the case ... they've been amnestied fifty times over.
From what I've seen and heard from my patients in Texas, the Hispanic voters do not approve of special privileges for those willing to break the law. The last Governor's election in 2002 led several to volunteer their opposition to Sanchez who was thought to be in favor of the protecting the actions of illegal immigrants who enter the country, break the law yet again, then run back across the border, leaving the rest of us to pay the bill.
This came out of FAIR (Federation for American Immigrant Reform) material. As citizens, we don't necessarily have the time or background to do what is required. The FAIR folks do a fine job.
Well, they can just "shove it."
It won't happen if we turn them in first. And their legal families for housing them illegally.
"The federal government isn't helping --- it's pouring money to the schools and county hospitals along the border which just attracts more coming over for the freebies -- and why go back with so much free stuff being given here.
Cutting off welfare programs, taking back that billions for the free health care for illegals in that Medicare package, making them pay their own way would do a lot to reverse the demographics. There should be no welfare benefits for foreigners --- that's what's changing the demographics of Texas so fast. It's like we're intentionally bringing in millions who can only depend on the government for everything."

Your right --- which is why hispanics elected Silvestre Reyes to Congress -- he was head of Border Patrol and put Operation Blockade and Operation Hold the Line into place --- he was seen as someone finally willing to do something about the border, unafraid to stand up to the Mexican government --- which condemned him for these actions. That is what got him his popularity in a mostly hispanic region.
I think in Mexico they're pretty much just ignoring him now --- and I read something in the Mexican papers that his wife of almost 3 years is pulling out of the next presidential race. The July elections weren't very good for his political party -- they lost in a couple crucial states --- PRI won in Durango and Chihuahua, PRD won in Zacatecas --- half that state is in the USA.
The folks in North Texas that don't know what is going on will never know what is going on because they don't care. The ones in North Texas that do care already have a very accurate assessment of what the problem is because they are up to their asses in the littles grinning b@s+@rds right now.
As far as doing something, when folks show up at the border area to help, every LEO for miles suddenly becomes inspired to be a neo-J.Edger Hover and arrest anyone that even attempts to interview or stop the wetbacks. Not exactly encouraging to folks here that could actually help stop them. And there are a LOT of such people here.
When the local pops at the border will fully support help when it is offered and apparently given, that is, to the point of making local law enforcement fully aware that "they are not to interfere" with the actions taken to defend lives and property at the border or come the next election they will not be voted out, they will simply be defunded in the next budget as they are not doing their jobs anyway, then support will be there. If everyone stands idly by and says "gee that's really not right" when the individuals that showed up to assist the families on the border are being hauled off to jail one can not really expect them to "do something."
Don't worry. He won't.
