I thought the ads were selected small market buys. This threat of a lawsuit almost assures national news coverage, which even is better than buying a national ad. :o)

Remember the Willie Horton ad from 1988? The Bush campaign ran it one time. Thats it. It ran once as a paid advertisement. After that, the dems went bonkers and it was played over and over and over on every channel.

And never mind that it was Algore that brought up Willie Horton first in the RAT primary.

Were there 2 Willie Horton ads? The one with the revolving door was not paid for by the Bush Campaign, if I recall (and that is the one the media seized on).

With this pre-emptive strike, the creators of the ad may not need to pay for it getting aired at all. Imagine, national coverage without spending a dime.
