...I resent Dick Cheney being used to justify Alan Keyes doing something that he himself said wasn't right in 2000.

I believe operative expression is "Well, if you want to play that way...." There is nothing wrong with a person who opposes a changing the rules (written or unwritten) taking advantage of the rule change if it occurs despite his opposition.
