Mary Kay Letourneau Released From Prison
GIG HARBOR, Wash. Mary Kay Letourneau (search), the grade school teacher convicted for having sex with a sixth-grade pupil, was released from prison early Wednesday, and her now 21-year-old former lover plans to challenge a court order that bars her from contacting him, a friend said.
"He's relieved that she's out of prison and currently he can't wait to see her," Noel Soriano said on a morning television news program.
Letourneau, who served 71/2 years in prison, slipped unnoticed past the hordes of reporters and gawkers outside the Washington Corrections Center for Women (search) before dawn.
As a condition of her release, Letourneau, 42, can't contact former pupil Vili Fualaau (search), the father of two of her children.

Uh huh. Everything that we in know in life we already have learned by the time the hormones kick in. What a shame that we can't drive, sign contracts, have a credit card, drink, or any of that other grown up stuff. We oughta be able to. After all, we can bone goofy teachers who aren't smart enough to know the difference between us and guys who are, y'know, old enough to vote.
I don't even know why we have to live so long. I mean, all the mysteries of life are revealed by the age of 13. So why do some people say that we learn new things from experience? Maturity, Schmaturity. "Age ain't nothing but a number." Ask R. Kelly, who wrote a song with that title for Aaliyah.
Also, being a guy, I DO draw a distinction between a male predator who views schoolgirls as sex objects and messed-up woman who sought love in a very wrong place.
No prejudice there, is there?
Enlighten me: what would it take for you to believe that a male teacher was seeking "love in a very wrong place" and that, conversely, a female teacher was a "predator?" Seems to me you have just made assumptions based on gender.
I maintain my opinion that Vili Fualaau was not harmed in any significant way (other than by becoming an underage father) by her actions.
Yeah, right. I agree. And I maintain my opinion that Christopher Reeve was not harmed in any significant way (other than not being able to walk) as a result of his equestrian accident.
Listen to yourself! You've just accepted fatherhood at the age of 13 as 'insignificant' in a boy's life. And the fact that Fool-laau is still attached to this train wreck of a woman after eight years is evidence of additional emotional scarring (on top of the fact that he has a jailbird absentee father).
If he had his wits about him, Fualaau would have moved on with his life, and accepted his liaison with Letourneau as a tragic -- but correctable -- mistake. Instead, it seems he is going to make a go of being with this nincompoop all the time, leading them both further down a narrow tunnel of uncertainty.
Every time a teacher balls one of her students, I have to say this, and I will say it again.
I have done nothing to deserve your sarcasm or rudeness. :)
If you feel compelled to make an example of me by making fun of my opinion, I would submit that continuing this discussion is pointless.
I will say, however, that at no point did I suggest that a kid of 13 or under has the life experience and decision-making capacity of a full-fledged adult. Nor did I say that I dreamed of boning my teachers.
I will say that based upon Vili Faulaau's testimony and the testimony of his mother and that of the case worker assigned to him that he was not harmed in any appreciable way by the 400+ times he had intercourse with his teacher.
I am a man and am familiar with how sexual urges can drive behavior. I know that statistically sexual abuse plagues men at a far higher rate than it does women. This isn't statistical skewing, or under-reporting by male victims, it's a fact.
I do not attempt to imply there's morality in Letourneau's actions...Quite the opposite if you took the time to read my posts carefully. I view her as horribly misguided, irresponsible, and unfit for reintegration for society. I still do not view her as a malicious rapist. She really thinks she loves the boy...And vice versa.
Adherence to a moral lifestyle is good for both the body and the soul.
Her original sentence was much shorter, but she violated her parole conditions by seeing the boy, and had her sentence increased to the maximum.
Which raised a lot of questions at the time, because at the time of the parole violation, Falaau had attained the age of consent in many states. Putting her away again for the maximum struck many of us, including this Libertarian, as excessive. That's a longer senetnce than most carjackers serve.
Today the plot thickened still more. LeTourneau has served her extended time and Falaau is now 21 with their two kids. He, Falaau, wants to get together with Mary Kay once again, and yet the court is still exercising some Javert-like instence that they stay apart. WHY? Now that they are both adults, whatever romantic choices they may make are totally up to them. Time for the law to butt out.
I don't think for a second that she should get her daughters back. But her boyfriend is now a consenting adult and so is she, so if they want to get back together that's fine. (Creepy, but fine.)
She's on probation for three years, so if she so much as brushes against a child, she'll be back in the slammer.
Good. I heard last night that she might go after custody of her daughters, which completely disgusts me. Sexual deviance aside, those girls have a home. Uprooting them now would be selfish and wrong. I hope there's a decent judge in Washington who will not allow it.
I also hope she isn't going to be living next door to me. She was released to King County.
It seemed VERY relevant to the current topic.
........or are there that many Sigourney Weaver fans out there?
...How many times do we have to say this.....
..she's a pedophile!,
She seduced a 12 yr old......she was impregnated by a 12 yr old!
Well sure........everyone does it.
#20..Well said!
Nope. She still got three years of probation to go.
I just can't improve on L.N.'s reply to to you.
Women have sex and men molest?
Are you aware that the standard operating procedure of a molester is to twist, manipulate and persuade the child to have sex with them?
And what's your take on the Elizabeth Smart case ? I believe her man was looking for love also. After all, he wanted Elizabeth to be his wife.
I know by your post you don't approve of NAMBLA, but what about the female equivalent?
I'm not saying that young boys can't be harmed by older women who take advantage of them. But as un-PC as this might be, I think there are differences between boys and girls and that by and large the harm to boys is not as great as the harm to girls.
It has been said plainly here and needs to be repeated, this is pedophelia.....I am a man, show me where I get to have sex with a 12 year old girl and not expect 10 - 20 in the state pen? Just because it was an opposite sex relationship, there still are huge ramifications. Sad comment on society when people really think this might be a good thing for a 12 year old.

But as un-PC as this might be, I think there are differences between boys and girls and that by and large the harm to boys is not as great as the harm to girls.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Ah, I see...so tell me which boys are going to be harmed and which are not? Just as you state this, while I am sure it may be true, thousands of boys and girls whether it is homosexual or heterosexual sex are harmed.
No harm done at all-- he's only an unemployed, high-school dropout at age 21, with 2 children that his mama takes care of.
No harm done there.
