Mary Kay Letourneau Released From Prison
GIG HARBOR, Wash. — Mary Kay Letourneau (search), the grade school teacher convicted for having sex with a sixth-grade pupil, was released from prison early Wednesday, and her now 21-year-old former lover plans to challenge a court order that bars her from contacting him, a friend said.
"He's relieved that she's out of prison and currently he can't wait to see her," Noel Soriano said on a morning television news program.
Letourneau, who served 71/2 years in prison, slipped unnoticed past the hordes of reporters and gawkers outside the Washington Corrections Center for Women (search) before dawn.
As a condition of her release, Letourneau, 42, can't contact former pupil Vili Fualaau (search), the father of two of her children.

Exactly. She should be shunned and protested the same as males molesters. Sick woman.
This case just tells me that there is a lot of mental disease in this country.

The kid was 12 the first time they were caught. 12. If he was a year younger, in some states it could have been 20 to life.
The same reporter who calls one of the primary victims her "lover" reports that "A judge sentenced her to six months in jail for second-degree child rape, and ordered her to stay away from Fualaau.
Letourneau: "We had a beautiful relationship, and I value it for what it was."
What is the matter with these people?! The reporter sounds as messed up as Letourneau.

The whole story is sad. Her husband was abusive and extremely adulterous, they struggled constantly to make ends meet, and the boy's father was in prison for armed robbery.
All indications were that she never acted inappropriately with another student.
She is childlike in interviews and truly seems to be mixed up. While she violated the law and legally committed child-rape, I think her greatest crime is irresponsibility and violation of the teacher-student trust every parent should be able to count on.
Law is a double-edged sword - It punishes for results rather than intentions. This is normally a good thing, however I have come to believe there was no malice in what she did...Just stupidity, selfishness, and a whole lot of messed up rationalization that makes her unfit to rejoin society. She should spend a long time under psychological treatment before she's let loose.
I do think, however, she deserves pity rather than venom. Not as much pity as the children victimized by this fiasco, however. That is the saddest story of all...
Sick. What rights should a mother in prison have when she's there for MOLESTING a child??
Our free-enterprise system is about to REWARD her as well.
God help her children. There are NO winners in this unfortunate mess.
The best thing for those 2 kids would have been adoption. The other 4 sound like they'll be ok in Alaska.

She does suffer from bipolar disorder... which this kind of behavior is not uncommon when in the bout of spme severity.

I think that is the crux of the matter. Speaking as a male, I don't believe boys are just as vulnerable as girls, and that this kind of experience tends to harm them as much as it does girls.
Many men who have mental illnesses and are child molesters themselves would disagree.

If you think that either males or females are not equally damaged by acts of sex outside of marriage, not even to mention the adultery and pedophilia and the other innocents victimized by what happened in this case, then there is something wrong with your thinking. I'm sorry, but I don't know any other way to put it.

I do value male and female children equally.
Also, as a boy, I can say that speaking for myself, a teacher having sex with me in 6th or 7th grade would not have left me emotionally scarred...Quite the opposite, in fact.
Also, being a guy, I DO draw a distinction between a male predator who views schoolgirls as sex objects and messed-up woman who sought love in a very wrong place.
I maintain my opinion that Vili Fualaau was not harmed in any significant way (other than by becoming an underage father) by her actions. I also maintain that her worst crime was failing to take the welfare of her own children as her dominant priority when making her irresponsible decisions. :)
MSNBC is just reporting that her attorney has just filed a writ seeking to have the contact ban REMOVED!
Thank you for the information. I knew that she had a political father, but I didn't know anything about him. I'm sorry to see the mess that his daughter became.
