Update

By Roger Harvey/Eyewitness News

Carmel, August 3 - A member of Congress claims authorities were led to a home in Carmel where hundreds of pounds of explosives were found and a terrorism plot was uncovered.

The link made between Carmel and terrorist activity surfaced during a campaign speech by Florida congresswoman Katherine Harris.

According to Tuesday's Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Congresswoman Harris told a crowd of supporters about a trip to the Midwest.

"The mayor of Carmel, Indiana recounted how a man of Middle Eastern heritage had been arrested. "Hundreds of pounds of explosives were found in his home. He had plans to blow up the area's entire power grid," said Harris.

The article goes on to say that when reporters tried to question her after the speech, Harris said, "I probably said too much."

Congresswoman Harris was back in Washington Tuesday for the
9/11 commission hearings. While her office would not make her available for an interview, Harris did publicly talk about terrorist concerns.

Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard declined an on-camera interview and instead told Eyewitness News by phone, "These incidents happen all over the country. We all need to be vigilant. For security purposes, I can't go into any details."

But Mayor Brainard did give more details to the Herald-Tribune. He told the newspaper a man was arrested and sent to the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay Cuba two years ago.

FBI agents in Indiana say no one is under arrest for terrorism in Carmel and that Harris doesn't know what she's talking about.

I'd say that is confirmation that Harris was more or less correct. Notice the FBI said no one is under arrest in Indiana, which would be true if the person is at GitMo. She probably muddled some details, thus "she doesn't know what she's talking about", or perhaps that could better be translated. "I wish she'd shut up and not blow the XXXXX operation"
