Given a moment alone with Sen. John Kerry, the president of Pittsburgh's firefighters union did what has become his No. 1 job. He asked for help in fighting city spending cuts that would put 168 of his members out of work.

Friends of labor such as Kerry and union leaders across the nation are getting the call from Pittsburgh, as the cradle of the union movement once again becomes a battleground for workers. Local labor leaders frame the fight over Pittsburgh budget cuts as a struggle for organized labor's future everywhere.

Fire and police unions are fighting the city's financial recovery plan (which calls for deep cuts in pay and numbers of fire/police) in court. What the unions do not offer is an alternative plan to pay for the manpower levels and pay they seek. We all know where they want that to come from though, all of us!!

I always fail to understand the Union's thinking because Kerry IS NOT A UNION MAN and never will be. THey think a lot like the NAACP.

I dispise unions as a whole, and also governmental largesse however one area I don't mind spending and spending big is in law enforcement and fire fighting. If I were king of the world, I'd give each an immediate doubling of their salaries.

Just to start off.
