So 20+ pounds of weapons grade plutonium or uranium won't make a dirty bomb ? please.

We were talking about U-238. PLEASE.

Your sarcastic 'please' indicates you have replace intelligent thought with sour emotion

Before you flame, perhaps you should read the entire thread. There was a retraction later.

You accuse me of not thinking ? I see evidence that we share the same crime.

I understand that most radical Islamic groups have a pretty long history of at-sea salvage ops

Not to give them too much credit, but they didn't have a long history of crashing commercial airliners into U.S. buildings before 9/11.

I think I'm starting to understand why George Carlin used to say "military intelligence" is an oxymoron

He said it for the same reason others use that phrase.
They're clueless.

I have a bumper sticker reading, "I was an oxymoron"

ASA's response here is a classic!

Where do you get one of those bumperstickers?

You flamed me but did not retract your flame to me. Sorry. When I am flamed, I do not go back and read all the posts before responding to the flame.

You can also go to OarkRidge Tenn Museum of Atomic Energy and see decommissioned nukes. Pretty cool museum.

As an Air Force veteran, George Carlin probably knew that the B-47 was not "another jet fighter".

I got mine as a charter member of the NASAA.
I checked their web site and it appears they no longer stock them.

Not to depart from the present thread too far, but do you remember that Russian boomer that was scuttled just south of this site with it's full component of nuclear-tipped missles on board?

Our illustrious US media tried to assure us that it was sunk in water so deep that the pressure would neutralise those atomic weapons! Hah! I have a deed to a bridge in New York that I will sell at a big discount to anyone that would actually believe that.

As far as I know, that sub is still there.

Learning how to steer a plane, once in the air, apparently doesn't take that much schooling. Conducting a salvage operation off the coast of the US would, I think, require a significantly larger outlay of people, equipment, etc. and would be extremely visible...probably have the CG on you in minutes.

Whatever you do, don't cut the red wire.

"Wait, I mean the blue wire!"

According to one of the articles referenced above:

"Officials believe the bomb sank at least five miles off the coast, beneath 20 feet of water and an additional 15 feet of sand and silt, said Maj. Don Robbins, deputy director of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons and Counter Proliferation Agency."

I'm not an expert on salvaging bombs, but 20 feet of water doesn't seem all that deep. That's scuba-diving depth, if I'm not mistaken. While not common, the equipment required is obtainable.

I'm not saying it would be "easy", but given that there are state sponsors of terrorism, it isn't beyond the realm of possibility. If I were a terrorist, I would think that detonating the device would be a preferable approach. It would require less of a footprint on the surface to accomplish and would be virtually untraceable.

Hopefully, the CG is keeping an eye on this area, assuming the coordinates have been communicated to them by the finder.

The articles said shallow..I don't know how deep that is. The weight and size of this thing would make it extremely hard for anyone to get it to the surface with scuba, I think.

If we on FR know about it, I'm pretty sure the homelad defense and CG people know exactly where it is.

There's a Minuteman missle silo complete with missle available for tours at Ellsworth AFB near Rapid City, South Dakota.

Do a google on glomar explorer. The soviet K-129 sank off Hawaii in April 1968 in 16,500 feet of water. The explorer was a cia built salvage vessel built to swipe it without Moscow knowing. They got ahold of it but it broke into 3 pieces. They retreived a small part that contained russian sailors. They made video of them being committed to the deep(buried at sea). The boat is still there. As far as one sinking near Georgia, I haven't heard of that one.
