Hmong journey

By Ben Stocking

Mercury News Vietnam Bureau

WAT THAM KRABOK, Thailand - Teng Yang and his family live on the other side of the earth from the home they will soon make in California. But in many ways, they inhabit another universe.

If they get sick, they slaughter a pig and two chickens as offerings to the spirits. A 13-year-old bride, a man with two wives -- these are accepted social arrangements in the dusty squatters' colony where they have spent the past 11 years of their drifters' lives.

Teng and his family -- a Hmong clan of 27 people from the jungles of Laos -- are moving to Fresno, a middle-class, Central Valley town whose social mores will be as baffling to them as the drive-through line at McDonald's.

Over the next several months, 15,000 other Laotian Hmong who live at this makeshift refugee camp will follow them, most settling in California, Minnesota and Wisconsin, the three U.S. states with the largest established Hmong populations.

Teng's younger brother Tong and his wife arrived in Fresno last week, and the rest of the family will follow over the summer and fall.

Remember they kill animals to have health return to them, and they are POLIGAMISTS!

No. That's why I said they should be educated in the basic aspects of American culture and what is expected of them as future American citizens.

They are still with several wives and large families. What are they going to change to fit in?

Which wife do you throw out of your clan?

Again, I'm asking, which wife is the old guy throwing out, and what happens to her, or them?

For the past 3 years, I have been working with AFPC(American Foreign Policy Council) to help the 200 refugee children in this group. Tibet took them in rather than let them starve. They had nothing, not even a blanket for under them or over them when the snow fell. They have been helped from private donations from people like myself. We have helped through guidance from Al Santoli of the AFPC to bring these people some sustenance until they could find a country that would help them stay alive.
If you want to read about the people that are being helped by this organization, go to www.afpc.org and read about the Asia Pacific Initiative which was started with the help of Dana Rohrabacher and Kurt Weldon. It is a great organization that have set up schools and hospitals in the Phils and been a positive representation of our citizens overseas. Hopefully, it will give hope to all of those who live in such horrible poverty. Yes, some of them are muslim, but those in Tibet are Christan children and adults. They were run out of their own homes by intruders and have been fortunate to have survived at all.

They were decimated for helping us after we left.

A lot more than 10% of them were killed by the commies.

So I can only presume that the American culture will again be sacrificed. I may as well get used to the idea of my husband having more than one wife. I guess the upside is I would be #1 and boss the others around.

Might be fun!

Haven't we paid off our debt to these stone age people yet???? I know they helped us during Vietnam war but that was 30 years ago. This is ridiculous.

I have no idea. When did this refugee policy start? If anything they should be a little selective with the families but what are you going to do?

Sigh. another 800 or so scheduled to arrive in my area of Wisconsin.

Local news (WBAY Green Bay) was gushing over them too. Showing clips of people donating items in a big warehouse.

I know that the Hmong fought with us in Vietnam but a line is going to have to be drawn sometime. We're bursting at the seams and both the RINOs and Rats don't care.

How long do you suggest we honor a commitment made to allies?

30+ years ago! This goes on due to our refugee industry of liberal churches and mad do-gooders..... who all derive a paycheck from this scam.

10 years in this case since it's a refugee scam. How many of these Hmong were even alive during the Vietnam war?

Leave 'em in Thailand. We've taken in 10s of thousands of Hmong and it should have ended years ago. The debt has been repaid. Many times over. I have nothing against the Hmong except that they should have no special "status" that makes them more desirable than other downtrodden 3rd worlders.

I've got nothing against these people. For all I know, they may be far more worthy than the Somali tribesmen, the Pakistani visa lottery winners, the Russian welfare queens. They probably are.

My question is with immigration at light speed at what point will American culture cease being the unique culture that is is/was?
