ALBUQUERQUE Counting on his liberal base to stick by him, Sen. John F. Kerry plans to aggressively court more conservative voters with a message that emphasizes traditional values of service, faith and family.
Following his pick last week of a running mate with potential appeal to rural communities, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee said he was not content to target the narrow band of swing voters that the two parties were expected to fight over in roughly 20 swing states.
"I'm going to talk to people on the right," Kerry told The Times on Friday during a joint interview with his vice presidential pick, Sen. John Edwards. "I want to talk to conservatives."
As for rank-and-file party members, Kerry said his record of strong support for environmental protection, gun control and abortion rights all core Democratic issues "speaks for itself about my priorities in policy terms."
Indeed, Kerry seemed unconcerned about antagonizing his liberal supporters.
"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner. A lot of people on the left don't like that, but that's who I am," he said.
The Massachusetts senator has already begun his effort to broaden his political reach. During a recent swing through the Midwest, where he tramped around farms and toted a shotgun on a trap-shooting range, Kerry said that he represented "conservative values," and emphasized his personal opposition to abortion.

The "Tax Man and the Tort Wonder Boy" alias Batman and Robin can't reach me with anything. Also they can't have my guns and they can leave the rest of my Rights and Freedoms alone given to me by God and put into writing by the Founding Fathers. God Bless America and the veterans past, present, and future.
I refuse to believe that Effen and his handlers are so stupid as to think that posing with a gun and saying he's personally against abortion (but in favor of partial birth abortion) is going to woo conservatives away from George Bush.
So, why do this? Maybe to goad the President's campaign into spending their resources on maintaining the (already reasonably secured) conservative vote, rather than in courting the swing voters and undecideds who really do determine the election outcome.
Well, of course. Just because he says he's a man of the people doesn't mean that he wants to leave his very private elitists and restricted clibs where he can be at ease with the other idle folks of immense wealth.
There's a whole lot of room to his right, not much to his left however.
Funny you should ask, I just bought ketchup today and I made it a point to buy Hunt's brand. It may seem trivial to some, but I felt better about myself. :-)
I've been buying hunts or the local store brand. I don't care for ketchup, the kids do. (I don't buy tyson either)
You aren't a hunter. Hunters don't craw on their belly with a 12 gauge. You stand when you are hunting most birds. You call turkeys in with box calls, and if you crawl for deer(slugs), they will use their very good hearing and run off faster than you can say Jack Robinson.
And hunters don't push to ban the .30-30.
At least he's absolutely right about that. There's no way he can alienate his supporters. Their hatred for Bush is so irrational that Effen could personally go to Abu Ghraib and put panties on the heads of detainees and nobody on the left would even blink.
Awwwwwwwwww. Rubbish.
"and the government will step in if you don't feel up to it."
As I understand it, he's also a bike rider. It cost thousands and he fell off of it as soon as the training wheels were taken off.
Can't wait to see his staff fall one by one as he demonstrates his prowess at shooting.
If he thinks his reaching out to the right is going to win him votes, I think the man has finally taken a tangible move that proves he's got mental health problems, something nobody can deny.
Don't care much for Hunts, myself. Always thought Heinz was much better. BTW, I think this presents conservatives with a nifty business opportunity . . . If you want to go in the ketchup business, you don't have to compete with Heinz anymore to corner the conservative market. All you have to do is compete with the No. 2 maker, which is far inferior, IMHO. Furthermore, this applies to any number of boycotted lefty products.
de·ceive
Synonyms: deceive, betray, mislead, beguile, delude, dupe, hoodwink, bamboozle, double-cross
These verbs mean to lead another into error, danger, or a disadvantageous position by underhand means. Deceive involves the deliberate misrepresentation of the truth: We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know, because they have never deceived us (Samuel Johnson). Betray implies treachery: When you betray somebody else, you also betray yourself (Isaac Bashevis Singer). Mislead means to lead in the wrong direction or into error of thought or action: My manhood, long misled by wandering fires,/Followed false lights (John Dryden). Beguile suggests deceiving by means of charm or allure: They beguiled unwary investors with tales of overnight fortunes. To delude is to mislead the mind or judgment. The government deluded the public about the dangers of low-level radiation. Dupe implies playing upon another's susceptibilities or naiveté: The shoppers were duped by false advertising. Hoodwink refers to deluding by trickery: It is difficult to hoodwink a smart lawyer. Bamboozle means to delude by the use of such tactics as hoaxing or artful persuasion: Perhaps if I wanted to be understood or to understand I would bamboozle myself into belief, but I am a reporter (Graham Greene). Double-cross implies the betrayal of a confidence or the willful breaking of a pledge: The thief double-crossed his accomplice.
"So, why do this?"
I think the Kerry campaign is reading a little too much into the conservative disappointment with George Bush on certain issues like immigration or No Child Left Behind.
Personally, I don't care for the president's stance on a lot of issues like signing CFR. But, on balance, issues like the War on Terror, taxes and appointing conservative judges are more than enough to make me a solid Bush voter.
Besides, however disappointing George Bush may have been on some issues, John Kerry is an absolute abomination on the same. If he thinks that conservatives will switch over to him because of lip service to "values", then he's too dumb to be president.
Kerry is hoping that the some of the posters on this site who gripe about Bush, not being right-wing enough, will vote for him in protest.
"I bagged two rich heifers."
"I'm a gun owner...."
"I'll kill anyone who touches my yacht or the families' SUV."
Ok you want to talk to us. Talk away. But what makes you think any of us are going to believe a word that comes out of your mouth. You want to change our mind? How about you calling Chuck Schumer and the rest of the gun grabbers in the Senate a bunch of clymers. And walk up to one of them with a camera rolling and punch them in the nose.
As for rank-and-file party members, Kerry said his record of strong support for environmental protection, gun control and abortion rights all core Democratic issues "speaks for itself about my priorities in policy terms."
You can't be pro second amendment and be for gun control. Good try but none of the voters the democrats lost in the south believe anything you democrats say anymore. As long as Fat Ted and the rest of extreme left wing wack jobs are running things you can just forget about winning in the red states.
"I'm a hunter. I'm a gun owner. A lot of people on the left don't like that, but that's who I am," he said.
Prove it Ketchup Boy go shoot a rabbit, skin it, clean it and cook it. And bring it out to a hunter to eat. And yeah, none of your servants are allowed to touch it or tell you what to do.
Me too. Geez, I had no idea. I'm gonna vote for Kerry now.
