You'll see it anyway, but developing ping.  Should I share my recollections of my childhood friendship with Hassoon where he'd disappear and reappear elsewhere?  Maybe a sleepwalking riff?

And 4 Marines in his own unit ambushed and murdered in a walled compound the same day he "left his unit" which were the first military reports we heard on the news?

Did the USMC float the initial bubble that he might be awol? That may have helped spare his life.

2. Junior enlisted personnel tend to do strange things

As do all immature people including junior officers and civilians. Some junior enlisted that I have known and worked with have shown more courage and displayed higher levels of responsibility than many others I have known - including senior enilisted and officer personnel.

Well, I wonder what will happen now that the jig is up and the kidnapping did not cover for his defection?

I hope he is branded a deserter and charged in military court.

how?
islamists lie.
that's how.

were he guilty of desertion he would not be turning himself in to the US embassy.

The man wants to go home to his homeland, the USA.

I second that!

It isn't slander when the major media have reported his desertion from the U.S. military by going AWOL and then getting "abducted."

Agree........weird case. But he's alive vs a poster boy for beheading. If he BS'd his way to freedom, didn't sign or tape any pro terror propaganda I say he's being smart keeping low profile. If he jumps up an brag's about his method of freedom he endangers the rest of the hostages , furture hostages by making his captors seek revenge on it's current prisoners. Right now he's an intel gold mine. I don't need nooooze on what happened as he's back in US hands and they "will" get the skinny and use it properly.

Just my opinion from the couch a gazillion miles from the event !....Stay safe !

He should be arrested shortly for desertion

Have you ever heard: "innocent until proved guilty?"

You're right, they should return him to his unit.

Let them take care of it.

People get arrested all the time prior to being proven guilty...

At least, in my recollection, it was an established fact that he was missing for several days before being kidnapped.

I may be confusing a fact with one of the terrorist claims....they said so much stuff I can't keep it all straight.

If it is true that it is only a terrorist claim that he was AWOL and then was captured....well, I take back my comments and we should reserve judgment.

But, I thought it was a fact he was gone for a couple days before being captured.

As one who lived through the 80's in the middle east I find the statement "safe in Beirut" to be an oxymoron.

Seriously, given that it is known that there are Islamic militants in Beirut, it would be a prudent action to lay low. Assume for a minute the following scenario (which may or may not be true):

1. Cpl Hassoun either is lured off base (theory 1) or deserts (theory 2). At any rate, he someone leaves the relative safety of the base.
2. Once off base, he falls into the hands of Ansar al Islam (not Zarqawy's group - different people, different MO, Ansar hasn't done any beheadings)
3. Ansar threatens to behead him, and makes the video tape
4. Cpl Hassoun convinces them he is Muslim and over the days preparing for his death they buy it.
5. They release him, make him swear not to go back to his unit, and smuggle him to Beirut.

I think we can assume that if this scenario is close to what happened, that he would probably still fear for his life and be concerned that he was being watched.

I agree the entire thing is strange. I also wonder who made those Arabic posts on the boards claiming he WAS beheaded?

Hmmmm? I don't think so. We don't know how or why he left his post in Iraq.

For all we know .. he was tasked to do this to see if the road led THROUGH SYRIA.

Because of his religion and family in Lebenon, he could have been offered a covert op .. we need to wait and find out. You can probably bet we will not be told it was a covert op .. but I'm really suspicious.
