I'm a firm believer in the concept of innocent till proven guilty. In this case we're talking about a Marine (one of those who are never left behind)

He may very well be guilty, but untill its proven I prefer to hear his story and my govts. story, not the claims of terrorists.

If true, and he returns to his unit, then the usual small subset of knee-jerk blowhard spam freepers owe him a huge apology for defamation and slander.

I agree.

He should be arrested shortly for desertion

Have you ever heard: "innocent until proved guilty?"

I think he had a weak moment, decided to slip away for a booty call and fell into the hands of the whack-jobs. Since he was a Lebanese Muslim, the whack-jobs thought it better to let him go rather than saw his head off, fearing political backlash.

So they posed him for a photo-op, then smuggled him to Lebanon to desert the Marines, with his desertion being the best PR they could get. They figured he would renounce the US Military and Iraq policy, while staying in Lebanon where he couldn't be grabbed.

He probably played along, until having arriving in Beirut and feeling free enough to contact the US embassy. Evidently, he has a life in the USA that he doesn't want to surrender.

something very strange here ... on one hand, it looks like he went AWOL, had some friends arrange a photo shoot of him "captive", got "free", called the family, the family called the military, hooked up with the family, have spent some time getting their story straight

or

OTOH, he's one of the first captives taken, then spirited away to another country and freed ...

this should prove interesting ...

His "I will desert the military if you spare my life" may have been a ruse to save his own hide. Thwarting the terrorist threat of beheading him. Would not surprise me if he ended back in the thick of the WOT soon. As of now, I will give him the benefit of a doubt instead of launching into the assumption that he deserted.

I said arrested, not punished.

Also, every Marine that I know of would have fought tooth and nail to find a way back to a friendly unit ASAP if this was just a "mix-up." There is no explanation for the "long walk" across Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. We'll see.

Thank you. That was well said. We should err on the side of caution until the facts are known...

I hope that's the case and, if so, he has some useful intelligence to share with the coalition command.

You want him arrested and punished all at the same time. I say we err on the side of caution, and weigh the evidence once we hear all sides.

Fight who and with what weaponry? That's not realistic if he's been stripped of his rifle, etc. He's a sitting duck in that uniform.

He's a sitting duck if he's on the floor on his knees, blindfolded and hogtied, with an AK-47 planted on his temple and a rusty sword waiting in the wings.

It is standard procedure to arrest someone prior to charging them & proving their guilt.
